One morning in November last year, I commented on a post by Nithin Kamath that highlighted the importance of sports. As fate would have it, Abhinav Singh Negi from the Rainmatter by Zerodha team replied. That conversation shifted to email, and soon, multiple threads followed. I won’t dive into the entire process here, but it has been a journey! . . . . . I have long admired the Zerodha business model and even tried to apply it at StepOut for a while - bootstrap, raise little to no funds, and get profitable. However, the journey we were on—and the industry we operated in—made it a bit more challenging. We had to establish a new category, capitalize on our early mover advantage by scaling fast, build for a global audience while sitting in India, and rely heavily on online communication to engage with customers. There were many hurdles. But there was also a dream—a dream to create a solution that was both affordable and accessible, powered by technology. A dream fueled by passion and love for sports. A dream many of us have had at some point or another. This investment is definitely a milestone in our larger mission. Exciting times for a company that means so much more to me than just an investment. Those who know me personally, are well aware about how fanatical I am about sport as well as data driven decision making. My role as an investor in StepOut was predominantly driven by my love for all things football/soccer. Over the last few months, I’ve spent a lot more time with the cofounders Sayak and Jeet, got under the skin of the transformational impact of analytics in sport and how the product platform goes about solving problems, as well as interacted directly with StepOut’s ever growing list of global customers, including top tier professional football clubs across Europe (La Liga, Eredivisie), United States (MLS) and India (ISL). As such, I am delighted not just with the Rainmatter by Zerodha investment which is a great testament to the product, the people and the business, but also feel a real buzz about being involved in the journey ahead and the endless possibilities of growth with a passionate purpose!

Their platform allows teams, coaches, and players to upload match videos and quickly receive data-driven insights to improve performance. StepOut’s technology is accessible and easy to use, enabling players at all levels to track their progress and helping scouts efficiently evaluate talent. Tools like these were previously available only to elite teams. StepOut is opening up opportunities for players across India, breaking down barriers to entry in the sport, and fostering a more inclusive football ecosystem at the grassroots level.
