For me, ranking system (cutoff) set for different categories (UR/OC, OBC, SC/ST) in competitive/assessment exams for recruitment into Indian government agencies is confusing🤔and ridiculous. For e.g., UGC NET (a qualifier assessment exam for Asst Prof/JRF/PhD at university level). I read the cutoff notice for last cycle (June 2024). For Economics (Asst Prof) it was 182 for UR/OC while 144 for ST. How come one qualify with less marks and one with more? It infers that a person's competency, ability to think/teach, learn, thought process is weaker compared to people from other categories. (FYI: JRF cutoff was same for both ST and PwD Visually Impaired (VI) UR/OC for Economics in June 2024 assessment cycle). Having same JRF cut off, does that mean a ST candidate by default is only capable of efforts similar to that of PwDs? Or those PwDs VI belonging to UR/OC have to score the highest among other PwD VI categories as they are considered to have better living standards as seen by societal norms? Why can't the ST candidate (not being PwD) score like 200+ (for Economics) and qualify JRF? The benchmarks ranking set to qualify not only in NET but for any govt competitive exams is not convincing enough and it's ridiculous. Keeping PwDs aside, why can't there be a single unified rank bar for qualifying among normal candidates from UR/OC, OBC, SC/ST? pre-British India ofcourse had caste systems but it was largely based on job roles and peaceful coexistence was there. British to rule India, knew that peaceful coexistence among different communities must be broken. Today, what we knew so called caste discrimination of lower caste by upper caste, suppression, oppression, identity crisis: all stems from the grand strategy of "Divide & Rule" by the British. The Report on the Census of India (1871, 1901, 1931) and H.H. Reisley's 'The People of India' (1908) published during the British India era carried the notion that upper caste (today largely UR/OC) had traits of higher intelligence making them suitable for administrative roles while lower caste had traits of lesser intelligence making them suitable for labour-oriented ones. Criminal Tribes Act (1871), Military Recruitment Manuals of British India era, James Mill's 'The History of India' and many British India era publications carried in-favour of similar notions. All were colonial narratives & policies that are now deeply rooted in Indian society. There is no strong empirical/solid scientific evidence to prove different categories (UR/OC, OBC, SC/ST) are more/lesser intelligent by birth. But seeing the ranking (marking) systems being implemented indeed makes colonial narratives to be true. If true, then why there are no relaxation provisions for UR/OC for entries requiring physical fitness process? IF THIS MAKES NO SENSE, THEN CURRENT RESERVATION WITH DIFFERENT RANKING FOR DIFFERENT CATEGORIES followed by GOVT's COMPETITIVE EXAMS/ASSESSMENTS SHOULD ALSO MAKE NO SENSE.

⚠️Can rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) doom🪦degree programmes such as International Relations, Political Science, Defence and Strategic Studies and similar fields? Although AI dates back to 1956 and has been continuously developed alongside other technological advancements, it surged in popularity in November 2022 with the public announcement of ChatGPT. From late 2022 to till now; 1️⃣ Brussels School of International Studies - Closed🪦 2️⃣ Boston University's PhD in Pol Sci - Paused🔐 3️⃣ California State University's IR programme - Closed🪦 and handful of regional level academic institutions were closed. A common pattern I observed was 'lack of funding' as stated in those university websites. In my opinion, the actual reason would be that funds were redirected towards other academic programmes, probably technological based degrees. Major corporations and top universities always have the upper hand in dictating and shaping the world, driving changes and breakthroughs. Universities are one of the major places where innovation happens. No wonder, then, that parent bodies and funding institutions direct significant funds towards programmes that drive greater innovation, thereby reducing priorities for degrees with the least tangible outputs, with IR related domains being one of those. The pressure to stay ahead of competition by participating in what dictates the greater part of innovation will flow from Top 10 universities to top 100, then top 500, 1000 and ultimately reach the universities and colleges in your city; sooner or later. While there is no solid evidence that IR programmes being shut down is due to advancement of AI, I am leaving this question for all the fellow IR researchers out there. I have already discussed the sad state of affairs of these degree programmes in the context of India in my previous posts such as lack of employment opportunities, outdated syllabus, lack of private-university university-university partnerships and more. Universities in India offering these degrees are yet to address these issues (have a long way to go). Due to the advancement of AI, it will further contribute to the lack of funding and shift focus, thereby placing IR related domains lower on the priority scale. This is an intangible threat for now, and most of the IR departments that have shut down are not directly due to AI. However, they will certainly be doomed by AI if not taken seriously and addressed properly, sooner or later. Image Credit - Blogs of War

Many people, especially undergraduates starting their research and writing careers, are often confused about news magazines and academic journals, particularly regarding why the former pays them while the latter expects them to pay. Here are the key differences based on this particular question. 1️⃣ Orientation Newspapers & magazines serve as a source of current affairs including in-depth analysis based on the former aspect. It can be easily understood by anyone with minimal education qualifications. Academic journals publish original research in a particular field thereby advancing/opening new gates of knowledge. Being technical, it can be understood by people with minimum university level of education in that particular field. 2️⃣ Population Served Theoretically, newspapers & magazines have unlimited readership scalability. Even for niche focused, they do have millions of readers from different demographics. Academic journals do not own this ability. For example: 6,015 academic institutions in India offer computer science degree while 54 offer defence & strategic studies degree. So, the maximum audience ceiling that can be attained by respective journals would be 4.81 lakhs and 4,320 readers (assuming class of 80 in each university/college are graduating per year + additional 10% - 20% extra ceiling for global readership). Moreover, once graduated, they might not become a loyal reader (returning reader). While Open Access (OA) is a standard reason, from a more logical perspective, journals under OA asks the authors to pay because; 1️⃣ Given their audience ceiling (especially for lesser known fields), journals cannot cover operating costs and certainly cannot make profits from that readership ceiling. So costs basically turns towards the author. 2️⃣ Given the notion: research paper will not be certainly read outside of that particular field, the journal management carrying those papers for unlimited period under their banner and promised delivery of it to niche readers, adds up huge costs given it won't reap profits in long-term too. University-backed journals benefit from funding provided by their parent institutions, ensuring financial support & sustainability. However, challenges arise when private players enter this business model (OA). This gives rise to exorbitant APCs, unethical practices and exploitations. For those wondering whether to pay to publish in journals, my thoughts; 1️⃣ Quality over Quantity. 2️⃣ Ensure your paper adds originality and avoid grinding same things over. 3️⃣ Lookout for internships, contracts, fellowships etc, whereby becoming part of team, you may bypass APCs and maybe get lucky with remuneration too. 4️⃣ Choose peer-reviewed journals for your academic advancements while newspapers, magazines & trade journals for keeping your presence updated. 5️⃣ Publish only if you need and it adds value to your career objectives. Ensuring these basic checklist can reduce unwanted costs. Image Credit: ARCC-Library

Being an independent and small-scale publisher; sharing some of my self-taught insights for those looking to start a small digital (news) publishing platform; 1) Choose your niche wisely Millions of webpages exist under the umbrella category 'news' all over Internet. Ten thousands are added on daily basis. So, to avoid saturation trap, you must choose a niche that you know very well and enjoy working long-term. Ex: I created The Viyug to cater the audience of foreign affairs carrying Indian-centric perspectives 2) Choose IT solutions carefully For non-technical persons, it might be a hassle at start, but you must take time to get acquainted with Wordpress and self-hosted Wordpress. If you are based in India and looking to integrate a Paywall into your existing Wordpress site, then you will face difficulties unless you are willing to spend more budget. If you plan to move to self-hosted solution, you will face temporary blocks in your publishing routine till migration of site is completed. So, study and plan when choosing web-hosting provider, domain registrar and integrations. 3) Funding? For those starting from absolute zero, ideal approach would be; set most basic blog site and funding from your parents. This opinion stems from quick search over internet that several start their first blog during high school or while pursuing undergraduate. At starting, you will face costs only for web infrastructure and 1 or 2 freelance writers, (could be great if you collaborate with friends though). Once 6 months down the lane, given you publish at least thrice a week, its perfect time to integrate Google Ad-sense and subscription wall as you could have accumulated decent amount of articles and your Site template perfectly comes to its shape. 4) Cracking the Algorithm of Loyal Internet Traffic Loyal audience are those who can be termed as (paid) subscribers and returning internet traffic of your site and read almost every posts over long-term. In context of running an international relations (IR) site, targeting traffic who are pursuing IR degrees and those employed in think tanks are your short-term readers (gains). Because once they graduate and those employed knew better websites in IR niche won't necessarily return to your website ever again. But those pursuing/employed in engineering or finance, who are interested in IR and current affairs will turn out to be your loyal audience. So, target those internet traffic (predominantly from other industries but interested in IR) for long-term gains and building loyal readership base. 5) Patience is Key There is always competition over internet and as mentioned, there are already millions of webpages on any given niche. It takes years to establish and make a Site stable. While good SEO practices make your Site crawl up in search engines, it takes mastery of digital sphere to bring it up in front of your loyal readers. Build good short-term plan for daily operations and long-term plan for success and growth
