𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫.. The government has set an ambitious target to achieve $100 bn export for textile products by 2030. The cumulative exports of textiles and apparel from India during April 2023-March 2024 registered a de-growth of 3.24 percent at $34.4 bn, as compared to $35.5 bn in April 2022- March 2023. In 2021-22, outward shipments of textiles and apparel were recorded at over $41 bn. The challenges like the Red Sea crisis has contributed to the export decline last year. However, exports of textiles and apparel rose marginally by 0.89 percent to $2.77 bn in April 2024 as against $2.75 bn in the same month of the previous year. Many exporters have reported improved order books in the first quarter of the current fiscal year. To further boost exports, the industry need to focus on new markets and products with higher global trade potential, aided by the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. There is need for scaling and increased investment in the sector to establish confidence in sourcing from India by all global brands. India has been losing ground in the global garment trade to countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam due to factors such as lower labor costs and larger operational footprints, as well as benefits from FTAs. The advantages from FTAs are now visible as garment exports have registered 16.8% growth in Mauritius and 5.7% in Australia for the period April-Feb 2023-24, compared to the same period last year. The signing of FTA in the near future with the UK, which accounts for roughly 8% of Indian apparel exports, will provide the clothing industry a muchneeded boost.
