Using a 𝙉𝙞-𝘾𝙧 (Nickel-Chromium) panel instead of the 𝙎𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙬𝙞𝙣 𝙋𝙎𝙈-5 panel for sensitivity confirmation of penetrants is not common or recommended because these panels are designed and standardized for specific purposes. Here are the reasons why: 𝟭. 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 The Sherwin PSM-5 panel is an industry-standard tool specifically designed to evaluate the sensitivity and performance of penetrant systems. Ni-Cr panels are not standardized for this purpose and might not have the controlled surface roughness, crack patterns, or calibrated defect sizes necessary for sensitivity testing. 𝟮. 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 Sherwin PSM-5 panels are made with calibrated titanium or aluminum plates, with tightly controlled crack sizes and configurations, making them ideal for evaluating penetrant sensitivity. Ni-Cr panels, typically used for other purposes like corrosion or heat resistance testing, may lack the precise defect geometry and surface properties needed to reliably assess penetrant sensitivity. 𝟯. 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 The PSM-5 panel provides repeatable and reliable results because it is manufactured and certified to meet specific standards such as AMS 2644. Ni-Cr panels cannot ensure consistent defect visibility due to variability in surface properties and manufacturing processes, leading to less reliable results. 𝟰. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 Sensitivity confirmation of penetrants often requires adherence to industry standards like AMS 2644 or ASTM E1417. These standards specify the use of approved and calibrated panels such as PSM-5. Using a Ni-Cr panel may lead to non-compliance with these standards, potentially invalidating test results. 𝟱. 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 The interaction of penetrants with the panel surface is crucial for sensitivity evaluation. Ni-Cr alloys may have surface properties (e.g., wettability, porosity) that differ significantly from those of standard panels, potentially affecting the penetrant's performance and test outcomes. 𝓒𝓸𝓷𝓬𝓵𝓾𝓼𝓲𝓸𝓷 While a Ni-Cr panel may have applications in other areas of material testing, it is not suitable for sensitivity confirmation of penetrants. The PSM-5 panel remains the industry-standard tool due to its precise manufacturing, calibration, and compliance with aerospace and non-destructive testing standards. If there are specific limitations or challenges with obtaining PSM-5 panels, alternative standardized panels compliant with AMS 2644 could be considered instead.

The Importance of Identifying Cracks in MPI: The Role of Black Ink and Clear Backgrounds Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and reliability of components, especially in industries where even the smallest defect can lead to catastrophic failures. Detecting cracks and flaws during MPI is not just about compliance but about preventing potential disasters. One key factor in the success of MPI is the use of ZChem Black Magnetic Ink. This specialized ink enhances the visibility of indications, especially under UV light. Its high contrast against a clear background ensures that even the smallest cracks or imperfections stand out, allowing inspectors to accurately evaluate the integrity of the component. A clean and clear background is equally important, as it reduces visual noise and provides a sharp contrast for the black ink to reveal indications with precision. Together, the ink and background work as a team, making the inspection process efficient and reliable. At the heart of every safety and quality assurance initiative lies a commitment to excellence. And in MPI, attention to detail—such as selecting the right ink and preparing a clear inspection background—is what sets apart effective inspections from missed opportunities. Let’s continue to prioritize innovation and quality in our NDT practices for a safer tomorrow! Agree?
