  • Wastefront has officially started construction on its GBP 100 million tyre-to-fuel plant at the Port of Sunderland, marking the UK's first large-scale facility dedicated to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production. In addition to generating more than 100 local employments, this milestone places Wastefront, supported by International Airlines Group (IAG), as a major force in achieving the UK's carbon reduction goals. The Sunderland facility will use pyrolysis technology to run as a completely circular system, reusing process gasses to generate electricity. Ten million end-of-life tyres will be processed yearly by the plant once it is fully operational by 2027, turning them into tyre-derived oil that can be refined into SAF and other sustainable fuels. By 2030, Wastefront plans to build four large facilities that will produce 128,000 tonnes of oil a year, which is enough to produce around 90,000 tonnes of SAF. https://lnkd.in/d4efaiuD #Wastefront #InternationalAirlinesGroup #TyreToFuelFacility #SustainableAviationFuel #SAF

  • Continental Targets Lower Emissions and Higher Efficiency in Tyre Innovation Continental Tires is ramping up efforts to cut CO₂ emissions and improve tyre efficiency, with a focus on reducing rolling resistance and increasing mileage. Speaking at Tire Technology Expo 2025, Prof Burkhard Wies , Head of Applied Research and Innovation, highlighted advancements in tyre technology that have led to a 15 percent drop in urban tyre emissions and further reductions when used on electric trucks. The company is also tackling tyre wear pollution, including harmful microplastic emissions, and working to replace 6PPD, a chemical linked to environmental damage. New high-precision testing methods are being developed to enhance braking performance and sustainability. With tighter EU regulations expected, Continental is positioning itself at the forefront of cleaner, longer-lasting tyre solutions. #TireTehchExpo

  • Continental Tire’s Sustainability Chief Outlines Ambitious Vision for 2050 At the recent Tire Technology Expo, Jorge Almeida, Head of Sustainability at Continental Tires, laid out the company’s bold vision for a greener future, emphasising the urgent need for transformation in the industry. “Sustainability isn’t just about ticking regulatory boxes—it’s about fundamentally rethinking how we operate,” Almeida stated. “By 2050, we aim to be 100 percent sustainable across materials, operations and our entire value chain.” Continental’s strategy is built around three key impact areas: climate, nature and people. Almeida explained that reducing rolling resistance has long been a focus, but the company is accelerating efforts by incorporating more renewable and recycled materials into its products. “In just a few years, we’ve gone from incremental improvements to launching a tyre with 65 percent sustainable content—all while maintaining top performance ratings,” he noted. But sustainability isn’t just about materials—it’s also about operations. Continental is working to cut waste, reduce water and energy consumption, and make factories safer. “Legislation sets the minimum bar, but we want to go further. We can’t wait for policies to dictate progress—we must lead the way,” Almeida asserted. One of the biggest challenges remains end-of-life tyres. “We need to stop calling it ‘end of life’ and start thinking in terms of ‘post-use’—what comes next?” Almeida urged. He highlighted the importance of designing tyres with circularity in mind, making it easier to recover and reuse valuable materials. Looking ahead, he stressed that electrification will change the game. “EVs demand different tyre properties—longer lifespan, lower wear, and safer, more efficient performance. That’s why we must innovate across the entire lifecycle, from design to disposal.” Despite the ambitious goals, Almeida remains confident: “This isn’t just a vision. We’re making real progress. Sustainability isn’t a distant dream—it’s happening now.” As the tyre industry grapples with the realities of climate change, resource scarcity, and regulatory uncertainty, Continental’s approach underscores a broader shift: moving beyond compliance to proactive leadership. While 2050 may seem far off, Almeida’s message was clear—the time to act is now. #TireTechExpo

Tire Technology Expo Opens with Call for Enhanced Consumer Communication and Safety Innovation The Tire Technology Expo kicked off today with the expo founder, Tony Robinson, urging manufacturers to bridge the knowledge gap with consumers while embracing new technologies that could revolutionise road safety. "My biggest wish is that we could get across that boundary of knowledge and information to enable people to understand how fabulous your products are and how important they are," said he. Robinson highlighted that most drivers fail to appreciate how their vehicle's safety depends entirely on four relatively small "footprints" of rubber connecting them to the road. He called current tyre pressure monitoring systems "twitchy" and proposed dashboard indicators for tyre tread depth to warn drivers when replacement is needed. Looking to the future, Robinson envisioned tyres equipped with sensors that could communicate with other vehicles, warning drivers about hazardous conditions like flooding. "If we've got car-to-car high-fidelity communication going on, the cars ahead of us—their tyres with sensors can alert us to the fact we're coming up to a section of road that's flooding," he explained. He also suggested tyres could transmit valuable data to weather forecasting services and help identify developing potholes before they become significant hazards. While acknowledging the industry's growing focus on sustainability and rolling resistance, Robinson emphasised that safety remains the paramount concern for tyre manufacturers. "That word safety has always been probably the most important word," he said. The conference continues through the week with over 160 scheduled speakers and is expected to address challenges facing the global tyre industry, including technological innovation, environmental regulations, and market competition. #TireTechExpo #safety
