[en] The problem of stress and displacement fields in an infinite transversely isotropic medium, when a penny-shaped crack is opened by an asymmetrical system of body forces, is solved; the body forces are concentrated on a single interior surface situated at a finite distance from the crack

AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper investigates the diffraction of light by apodized apertures. The diffraction equation is solved numerically starting with an apertured plane wave or Gaussian beam. A function chosen to characterize spatial intensity modulation is then plotted versus Fresnel number for differing amounts of apodization so that the benefit gained thereby may be quantitatively assessed. In addition, the energy loss incurred due to insertion of an apodized aperture in front of an existing hard aperture is determined. (U.S.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The steady, symmetric slow rotation of a small sphere in a viscous fluid bounded externally by a circular cone is investigated. The method of reflections is used to obtain the hydrodynamic torque on the sphere and the flow field including the first-order effect of the boundary. Special attention is paid to the case when the vertical angle of the cone approaches O0, that is, the cone reduced to a slowly tapering circular cylinder. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper presents the theoretical results of a detailed investigation carried out into the plastic bending collapse behaviour of circular pipe. To predict the plastic energy dissipation during the deformation of circular pipe on the mid-section, a new mode of collapse mechanism is suggested. A modified plastic collapse analysis adapting upper bound technique and moving plastic hinge solution based on an existing deformation mechanism model was considered. This study shows clearly that the new mode of collapse mechanism suggested gives more closer to that of the practical collapse mechanism

AbstractAbstract
[en] An apodized aperture assembly using absorbing liquid or solid to vary transmission over the cross section thereof is used to minimize deleterious diffraction effects in high power lasers. By employing, for example, an absorbing liquid of varying optical density to obtain the transmission profile, a circular aperture of this type can be used to minimize diffraction effects, thereby substantially improving the performance of a high power laser system. AbstractAbstract
[en] The collective dynamics of an ensemble of density inhomogeneities in a rotating gravitating disk is considered. It is assumed that the inhomogeneities participate in the rotation of the disk and have small radial velocities. It is shown that the density contrasts being positive, the null geodesics are exponentially unstable. In this case, the collective gravitating field of inhomogeneities is stochastic. The space structure of the collective field is investigated. It is shown that with time, the density inhomogeneities form a fragmented ring, which has the almost constant density contrast and position on disk

AbstractAbstract
[en] The parameters of a new type of thermionic converter which has a number of concentric electrodes, is computed. The obtained theoretical efficiency of this new type of converter is nearly the efficiency of the ideal thermionic converter. The obtained results are explained by the reduction of the radiation loss from the emitter due to the electrode configuration. Efficiencies as high as 20% are expected from this type of converter now in construction. (author)
