AbstractAbstract
[en] We propose to exploit for plasma heating purposes the very low frequency limit of the Alfven wave resonance condition, which reduces essentially to safety factor q=m/n, a rational number. It is shown that a substantial fraction of the total RF-energy can be absorbed by the plasma. The lowest possible frequency value is determined by the maximum tolerable width of the RF-magnetic islands which develop near the singular surface. The obvious interest of the proposed scheme is the low frequency value (f<=10 KHz) which allows the RF-coils to be protected by stainless steel or even to be put outside the liner

AbstractAbstract
[en] A general theory for particle acceleration by weak hydromagnetic turbulence with a given spectrum of waves is described. Various limiting cases, corresponding to Fermi acceleration and magnetic pumping, are discussed and two numerical examples illustrating them are given. An attempt is made to show that the expression for the rate of Fermi acceleration is valid for finite amplitudes

AbstractAbstract
[en] It is experimentally demonstrated in the ATC device that, with appropriate adjustment of the external magnetic circuitry, the tokamak plasma may be stable for two different major radii. The dynamics of the transition between the two equilibria involves a faster compression and expansion of the plasma than is practical in the monostable case; this may be useful in the Artsimovich-Furth-Ellis axisymmetric magnetic pumping scheme

[en] An experimental device is described which is a combination of Tokamak and a high-voltage theta-pinch. Eight Blumlein lines charged to a maximum of 100 kV are connected to the Tokamak shell which plays the role of a theta-pinch coil, besides stabilizing the plasma. A magnetic pulse with a maximum amplitude of 2.1 kG and a duration of 0.75 μsec is provided by discharging the Blumlein lines simultaneously. Heating of ions by the magnetic pulse is observed

[en] Fast ions are generated when a plasma is irradiated by an electromagnetic wave at an ion cyclotron harmonic frequency. Separate resonances are observed for the potassium isotopes up to the 13th harmonic. At high power levels, resonant interaction is also observed at the half-integer harmonics

AbstractAbstract
[en] The proposal involves a heat-pumping scheme based upon the first-order antiferromagnetism-ferromagnetism transition in FeRh alloy. Using the model S-T diagram for this alloy, the heat-pump cycles, are drawn up based on the transition latent heat absorption and emission when the transition is induced by applying magnetic field. The calculated values of heat coefficient φ for the cycles are ∼39 at ΔT=5 K and ∼30 at ΔT=10 K, where ΔT is the difference between the temperature surrounding and that of the heat receiver. These values are achieved using the comparatively low magnetic fields of ∼2x106 A m-1. The high values of φ, together with high value of cooling capacity, make it possible to consider Fe-Rh alloys as an effective magnetic heat-pump working body near the room temperature

AbstractAbstract
[en] A method is described for fast radial toroidal plasma column acceleration in an average ion-ion collision time or less back and forth in the plane of the closed containment means of the ATC described in U. S. Pat. No. 3,702,163, irreversibly to heat the plasma column. In accordance with this invention, current is flowed through the toroidal and poloidal coil means of the ATC and these coils are distributed to provide an unbalanced biasing force on the toroidal, current carrying, plasma column by means of a shaped magnetic field having an unstable region between spaced apart stable regions. By modulating the shaped field the plasma column is pushed back and forth between the two stable regions. In another embodiment, the plasma current is modulated to the same end. (U.S.)
