AbstractAbstract
[en] Radiolysis of poly(vinyl alcohol) fibers (PVA) in the presence of chloroform and carbon tetrachloride was investigated. Decrease in intrinsic viscosity was observed at lower dosages (up to 2.3 megarads); and above this, an increase was noted. The blank samples irradiated under similar conditions showed a continuous decrease in intrinsic viscosity. A discoloration in the samples irradiated in the presence of CCl4 and CHCl3 was also observed. It is attributed to double bond formation in the backbone. A marginal decrease in the tensile strength of the irradiated fibers was observed. However, the surface characteristics of the fibers did not change on irradiation. The thermogravimetric analysis revealed a better heat resistance in irradiated fibers

AbstractAbstract
[en] Results of a study of the scintillation yield of dioxane liquid scintillators containing solutes with different electronic affinity are reported. The chloroform and carbon tetrachloride quenching effects on these liquids are compared quantitatively. It is concluded that the solute electronic affinity has greater effect on the solvent-solute energy transfer than on the scintillation yield. (U.K.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The γ-radiolysis of hydrogen sulphide in the presence of butadiene and carbon tetrachloride was studied. Addition of butadiene causes the slow diminishing in G(H2) and sharp lowering in G(S) from 7.1 for pure H2S down to 0.8 at all the used concentrations of butadiene. When carbon tetrachloride is added to hydrogen sulphide, G(H2) is not changed but G(S) increases by ΔG(S)approximately2. The presence of butadiene and carbon tetrachloride together causes the same change in G(H2) as in the case of butadiene alone and lowers G(S) to zero. The ionic mechanism of molecular sulphur formation is proposed, consistent with the observed experimental facts. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The properties are described of low-ammonia latex concentrates produced by gamma-ray irradiation (0.5 to 2.0 Mrad dose) in the presence of carbon tetrachloride or chloroform as sensitizer. Dipping trails with irradiated concentrates and irradiated field latex, for the preparation of condoms and medical gloves, gave products with high ultimate elongation, low modulus, and high permanent set. A change from straight dipping to coagulant dipping and a heat treatment after drying resulted in improved physical properties. A notable feature of products prepared from these materials is their purity, i.e., low content of rubber chemicals. An economic disadvantage, at the present time, is the high initial cost of the irradiation equipment
