AbstractAbstract
[en] Heavy and light fragments in fission usually share a common angular distribution, associated with a defined parity for an isolated saddle-point state. In 230Th(n,f) at 708 keV, the triple-humped fission barrier model suggests an overlap of two saddle-point states of opposite parity based on the same asymmetric configuration. The model then predicts fore-and-aft asymmetry for, say, the distribution of heavy fragments at a given neutron energy. For neutrons polarized perpendicular to the beam there is asymmetry in the third perpendicular direction. Experimental verification may depend critically on energy resolution. At lower energies the effect may be more general in fissionable nuclei and there is a possibility of detecting and identifying p-wave resonances at much lower energies. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] In this paper we present results for the 230Th (d,pf) reaction, around 5.9 MeV excitation energy, obtained with an appropriate proton-fission time coincidence and an overall energy resolution of FWHM approximately 6keV. The resulting data shows the very same fine structure previously observed for the lower l values in the corresponding 230Th (n,f) reaction, but an additional set of higher spin states, not accessible with (n,f) reaction also appears. These new results support and confirm our previous interpretation of the (n,f) data, namely that we are again observing two close-lying rotational bands with opposite parities but this for l values up till 5 (at least), a fact which can best be understood in terms of a ''triple humped potential barrier'', theoretically expected for an asymmetric, pearlike deformation of the excited compounds nucleus

AbstractAbstract
[en] The angular distributions of fission fragments of the 230Th(n,f) reaction have been measured for neutron energies running from 0.860 MeV to 5 MeV in 27 points. Three reactions -7Li(p,n)7Be, 3H(p,n)3He and 2H(d,n)3He- provided the incident neutrons with an energy resolution varying from +- 12 keV to +- 22 keV. Fragment detection was achieved through the use of thin polycarbonates plastic foils (Makrofol). The experimental angular distributions were fitted with polynomial expansions of even powers of cos theta and normalized to 1 for theta = 900. The α2 and α4 coefficients of the fits to our data and those of other authors are tabulated. The coefficients of anisotropy W(00)/W(900) from the present work are shown along other existing data in the same energy range
