AbstractAbstract
[en] Extraction of americium and europium from perchloric acid solutions with pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamides was studied. The solvate numbers and Am/Eu separation factors were determined. The extractability of N,N'-dialkylpyridine-2,6-dicarboxamides is shown to depend considerably on the type of substituents at the amide nitrogen atoms. Dialkyldiarylpyridine-2,6-dicarboxamides extract americium of europium from nitric acid or perchloric acid solutions much better, than N,N'-dialkyl and N,N,N',N'-tetraalkylpyridine-2,6-dicarboxamides. When coming from nitric acid to perchloric acid solutions, a sharp increase in extractability is observed due to so called perchlorate effect. Both dialkyldiarylpyridine-2,6-dicarboxamides and N,N'-dialkyl and N,N,N',N'-tetraalkylpyridine-2,6-dicarboxamides can be used for extracting americium or europium from perchloric acid solutions

Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] Scientists at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and Khlopin Radium Institute (KRI) collaboratively developed and validated the concept of a Universal Extraction (UNEX) process for simultaneously removing the major radionuclides (Cs, Sr, actinides, and lanthanides) from acidic radioactive waste in a single solvent extraction process. The process chemistry is unique and complicated, since the extractants, chlorinated cobalt dicarbollide (CCD), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and diphenyl-N,N-di-n-butylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (Ph2CMPO), operatesynergistically to extract the major radionuclides.A combination of classical chemistry techniques, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were utilized to identify and explain the structures formed in the organic phase with protons or metal ions. Model systems, CCD-PEG and CCD-bidentate organophosphorus compounds were studied and possible structures of complexes, existing in the organic phase, are proposed and properties of the UNEX extractant are discussed. AbstractAbstract
[en] The composition and structure of strontium and barium complexes in extraction systems based on chlorinated cobalt dicarbollide (CCD)-polyethylene glycol (PEG)-polar diluent (phenyltrifluoromethylsulfone or dichloroethane) were studied by the methods of IR spectroscopy or 13C NMR. It was ascertained that in the organic phase there are ionic couples [M2+, PEG]CCD2-. Strontium and barium complexes have similar compositions and structures: oxygen atoms of two OH groups and six COC groups of PEG molecule fill the first coordination sphere of the metals. Essential increase in efficiency of strontium and barium extraction with H-CCD solutions in the presence of PEG stems from the fact that all water molecules in the first coordination spheres of metal are replaced by COC and OH PEG groups with formation of a hydrophobic complex

Original Title
