AbstractAbstract
[en] A numerical investigation shows the possibility of an electrothermal interelectrode breakdown of the wall of an MHD-channel. Two-dimensional calculations were done for conditions close to those in large-scale MHD channels: Reynolds number ≅5x106, magnetic field 2.5 and 5 T, and average electron current density 0-5 A/cm2. Examination of the charge at the anode wall, which consists of ceramic electrodes and insulators, shows that the most probable breakdown from an induced electric field occurs in the insulating gap from a continuous upward propagation of an overheated region of the insulator through the flow. Integral electrical characteristics of the discharge are presented for two values of the magnetic field and various electrical loads on the part of the wall under investigation, and the two-dimensional distributions of the potential, current, and temperature are displayed

[en] Calculation methods of flows in MHD channels are reviewed. A quantitative analysis is carried out to the voltage-current characteristic of MHD generator electrodes in the arc discharge mode. In order to close the equations for the voltage-current characteristic, results are invoked of the solution of a two-dimensional electrodynamic problem on the current and potential distribution near the arc. Experimental data are compared with calculated values

AbstractAbstract
[en] A three-dimensional problem on flow of heat- and electricity conducting viscous gas in the channels of large-scale MHD-generators is considered. A system of equations including Navier-Stokes parabolized equations, a system of equations of k-E-turbulence model, two-dimensional equations of electrodynamics in cross section is solved by numerical method. A comparative analysis of integral and local characteristics of MHD-generator frame and diagonal channels under design conditions of flow and electric loading is carried out. Integral characteristics of considered channels practically coinside. Analysis of obtained local characteristics of the channels shows that frame-like channel is more preferable, in particular, relative to local separation of the boundary layers

AbstractAbstract
[en] Specific features of flow in MHD generators are discussed for the first generation of the open cycle MHD power plants: development of boundary layers, inhomogeneity of conductivity in the channel section, the Hall effect in a flow with inhomogeneous conductivity, the end effect and so on. It is shown that the conductivity inhomogeneity, while slightly affecting the conversion efficiency, increases considerably the required length of a channel. The neglect of this fact in simplified methods of calculating the MHD generators may introduce high inaccuracy in determination of competitiveness of MHD power plants as compared with other types of power plants. In order to get reasonable characteristics of MHD power plants a through optimization of the stream regime is required
