AbstractAbstract
[en] Using data collected with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) the author has performed a study of semileptonic B decay. This provides information on the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element Vcb that is a free parameter of the Standard Model. Understanding of b → c semileptonic decays can discriminate between various Phenomenological models Providing insight into the understanding of b → u transition. He observes 109 events consistent with anti Bo → D*+ ell -anti μ and he measures the branching fraction B(anti B → D*+ ell -anti μ) to be (4.6 ± 0.5 ± 1.1)% which yields a value of Vcb around 0.040 in the framework of the form factor models. He has also measured the polarization of the D*+ meson in this decay to be: a = 0.65 ± 0.66 ± 0.25 for lepton momentum >1.4 GeV/c. He has studied the behavior of other kinematical variables and the results are in agreement with theoretical models. He measures B(B → D**ell ν + B → D*π ell ν) = (1.8 ± 0.9 ± 0.7)%. He also exploits the capability of the anti B0→ D*+ell -anti ν as a tag for neutral B mesons. He measures the neutral B meson semileptonic branching ratio to be B(anti B0→X+ell -anti ν) = (10.5 ± 3.3 ± 0.7)% and the mixing parameter r = 0.23 ± 0.10 ± 0.08

AbstractAbstract
[en] Two measurements of the lifetime of neutral and charged B mesons in p bar p collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV by the CDF experiment are presented. The first relies on the study of exclusive decays of the type B → ψ K, the second on semileptonic decays of a B meson into a D degrees or a D. The combined results are τ(B+) = 1.62 ± 0.09 ps, τ(B0) = 1.60 ± 0.09 ps and τ(B+)/τ(B0) = 1.00 ± 0.07

AbstractAbstract
[en] A microstrip silicon detector SVX II has been proposed for the upgrade of the vertex detector of the CDF experiment to be installed for run II of the Tevatron in 1998. Three barrels of four layers of double sided detectors will cover the interaction region. The requirement of the silicon tracker and the specification of the sensors are discussed together with the proposed R ampersand D to verify the performance of the prototypes detectors produced by Sintef, Micron and Hamamatsu

AbstractAbstract
[en] Results on vertex detectors at various stages of operation and in different radiation environments were presented at VERTEX'99. We continue gaining experience from the long-term operation of vertex detectors and precision trackers at LEP, CDF, SLD, H1 and NOMAD. Preliminary results from the new vertex detectors cominuon on line at the B factories were presented. Intense R and D is taking place for the large scale and high radiation environment of the future experiments at the LHC. New detectors at the Tevatron, HERA-b and for heavy ion experiments should provide the first test of severe radiation conditions and high multiplicity events before the LHC will turn on

AbstractAbstract
[en] B and D semileptonic decays are reviewed. Special emphasis is given to the measurements of form factors and the extraction of CKM matrix elements. Experimental results are compared to theoretical models. New developments in the Heavy Quark Effective theory and a model independent determination of Vcb are discussed. AbstractAbstract
[en] Recent results from the CLEO electron-positron annihilation experiment are reviewed. A measurement of the semileptonic branching ratio is presented and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element is determined. Possible implications of non-BB-bar decays of the Υ(4S) on this measurement are discussed. Results of semileptonic decays are used to test the factorization hypothesis which is used to study hadronic B meson decays. (author) 19 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab

AbstractAbstract
[en] B-physics at hadron colliders is complementary to e+e- B-factories. At the Tevatron (Fermi laboratory), CDF experiment is pioneering secondary vertex triggering and will yield (along with DO experiment) valuable measurements for BS mixing, sin(2β) and CP asymmetries from the following decay processes: B → φKS, B → π+π-, and BS → K+K-. At both the Tevatron and the LHC (CERN) dedicated experiments (BTeV and LHCb) with improved particle identification systems and photon reconstruction will allow a clean extraction of the γ angle and will test new physics through precision measurements and sensitivity to discrepancies with the standard model predictions

AbstractAbstract
[en] Between 1992 and 1996 CDF collected about 100 pb of data at a √s = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. This data sample led to a large number of precision measurements of b hadrons properties including their masses, lifetimes and neutral B meson oscillation parameters and the discovery of the Bc meson. Here the author reports on three recent results: the measurement of the B+ production cross section, the search for radiative penguin B hadron decays and the measurement of the CP violating parameter sin(2β). These results are significant examples of the breadth of the CDF program. In 2001 the main injector will allow the Tevatron initially to deliver 1 pb-1 per year at √s = 2 TeV. The CDF detector will undergo major upgrades which will further increase the b physics reach. (author)

Three barrels of five layers of double-sided silicon microstrip detectors will cover the interaction region. A description of the project status will be presented. Emphasis will be given to the R and D program for silicon sensors which includes capacitance minimization; the study of coupling capacitor integrity; the operation of the detectors in conjunction with the SVXH and SVX2 readout chips in two beam tests and the determination of the detectors performance deterioration due to radiation damage.
