AbstractAbstract
[en] Device for the underwater disengagement of a nuclear reactor fuel element from a grapnel with at least two articulated fingers. The device is designed to be placed on the end of a duct for positioning fuel elements and includes jacks for adjusting the relative positions of the device and the grapnel-fuel element unit and for maintaining these positions, further jacks for unfastening the fingers of the grapnel from the body of the grapnel and still further, jacks for tilting the fingers of the grapnel so as to enable the fingers to release their hold on the fuel element

AbstractAbstract
[en] This thesis is devoted to the elaboration of the L3 second level trigger which is based on the dedicated programmable XOP processor. This system will reduce the trigger rate by a factor of ten and will ensure that the hardwired level-one processors function correctly. The present document describes all developments that L.A.P.P. is engaged in from the system design up to the complete experimental set up, especially: - The hardware development of the fast input memories as well as the FASTBUS interface unit which allows the microprocessor XOP to run as a performant FASTBUS Master, - the associated software developments, - the implementation of a VME test system dedicated to all control tasks

[en] The ECLine - Driver is a dual 256x16 - bits words fast ECLine generator fully controlled by CAMAC. Designed to fit requirements of High Energy Physics experiments, its flexibility makes it a general purpose unit. It is used on the LEP - L3 experiment, at CERN, to implement two applications. In the first one, it generates the ''trigger detector'' response in order to exercize the different trigger processors under experimental conditions. In the second one, it generates some 10000 synchronisation signals required to drive the level-1 energy trigger processor. 70 units are installed on the experiment

AbstractAbstract
[en] Positron emission tomography (PET) relies on a combination of the use of positron-emitting radioactive tracers and computerized tomography to monitor certain physiological and functional characteristics in vivo and noninvasively. Its special and most powerful applications to date are in brain physiology and neurology. There are many potential research applications in farm animals, such as the mapping of neuro-humoral pathways, but cost and the need for special facilities are likely to be prohibitive

AbstractAbstract
[en] We investigated 15 patients with one or more transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) in the internal carotid artery territory within the month following the most recent TIA. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured by single-photon emission computed tomography, using intravenous xenon-133 before and after injection of 1 g acetazolamide. Six patients had severe carotid stenosis or occlusion; the other nine patients had no significant carotid lesions. Twenty age-matched volunteers free of neurologic symptoms or history were used as controls. Mean CBF in the sylvian region was not significantly different between patients and controls. Seven patients exhibited a focal hypoperfusion at rest in the symptomatic hemisphere, and their hypoperfused areas were hyporeactive after administration of acetazolamide. Seven other patients exhibited hyporeactive areas after acetazolamide administration while their CBF tomograms at rest were normal. Thus, CBF abnormalities were detected in 14 of the 15 patients. Our findings suggest that CBF measured early after acetazolamide administration could be useful to confirm the clinical diagnosis of TIA. In the nine patients with no significant lesion of the internal carotid artery, the areas of hypoperfusion were small and were probably related to the focal ischemic event. In the six patients with severe lesions of the internal carotid artery, abnormalities were of variable size and intensity but were often large and pronounced. The discrepancy between these two subgroups of patients could be ascribed to the hemodynamic influence of the internal carotid artery lesions. Moreover, our findings may provide some insight into the pathophysiology of TIAs

AbstractAbstract
[en] The second level trigger hardware described here meets severe L3 experimental requirements. The XOP/FASTBUS interface with its software development boosts XOP into a very efficient FASTBUS processor. As fast as the fastest FASTBUS Sequencer, it makes proper use of the major intrinsic XOP performances. 8 refs, 2 figs, 2 tabs

AbstractAbstract
[en] In this study, two ways (cerebral blood flow (CBF) reactivity to acetazolamide and cerebral blood volume CBV)) for assessing the cerebral reserve using SPECT in normals and patients with occlusive carotid disease were compared. The aims were to study by SPECT the relation between these two ways and to establish that the CBV measurement by SPECT provides a satisfactory method for assessing hemodynamic reserve. CBF was measured by injection of xenon 133, for the CBV measurement 99 m technetium was injected. (author). 10 refs.; 1 fig.; 2 tabs
