AbstractAbstract
[en] The final neutrino oscillation results from the short-baseline accelerator experiments LSND and KARMEN are reviewed. The LSND experiment at LANSCE has observed an excess of ν-bare events interpreted as evidence for ν-barμ → ν-barμ appearance. This result suggests oscillations parameters in the range Δm2 2 = 0.2-10 eV2, implying that at least one neutrino could have a mass greater than 0.4 eV. The similar KARMEN experiment at ISIS observes no beam excess. The corresponding oscillation limit sin2(2Θ) < 1.7 x 10-3 (90% CL.) is the most stringent νμ-bar → ν-bare -- limit so far and excludes the high Δm2 LSND parameter space, while leaving some statistical space for oscillations at the two distinct regions Δm2 < 1 eV2 and Δm2 congruent with 7eV2

AbstractAbstract
[en] KARMEN, the Karlsruhe-Rutherford Medium Energy Neutrinoexperiment at the pulsed spallation neutron facility ISIS uses the beam stop neutrinos νμ, νe and anti νμ from π+ and μ+ decay at r search for neutrino oscillations in the appearance channels anti νμ → anti νe and anti νμ → anti νe. The signature for both oscillations is based on charged current neutrino nuclear interaction spectroscopy in a high resolution 56t liquid scintillator calorimeter. This report describes the results based on data acquired from June 1990 to August 1995. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] An essential task of particle physics over the next years will be the determination of the absolute mass scale of neutrinos. A key contribution to this issue is expected from the proposed Karlsruhe tritium neutrino experiment (KATRIN), which is designed to perform a high precision direct measurement of the mass of the electron neutrino. An international collaboration aims to set up and operate a large tritium β-decay experiment on site of FZK with the goal to improve the sensitivity for the electron neutrino mass from its current value of 3 eV by one order of magnitude to 0.3 eV. Pushing forward into the sub-eV range of neutrino masses the main motivation of KATRIN, will be to investigate the cosmological relevance of neutrinos. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The Karlsruhe-Rutherford Neutrino Experiment KARMEN at the spallation neutron facility ISIS investigates fundamental properties of neutrinos as well as their interactions with matter. Low energy neutrinos with energies up to 50 MeV emitted by the pulsed ν-source ISIS are detected by a 56 tonne high resolution liquid scintillation calorimeter. Clear ν-signatures allow a reliable search for neutrino oscillations of the type νμ→νe and νμ→νe as well as a detailed investigation of neutrino-nucleus interactions in an energy range important for astrophysics. We present the results of the KARMEN experiment from data taking in the period from June 1990 - December 1995. (author) 9 figs., 10 refs

AbstractAbstract
[en] The measurement of the electron energy spectrum close to the endpoint of the β-decay of nuclei (3H, 187Re) is the only high-sensitivity method to investigate the fundamental ν-mass scale m ν in a direct and model-independent way. While cryogenic bolometers investigating the β-decay of 187Re currently yield an upper limit m ν < 15 eV, the to-date most stringent limit m ν < 2.3 eV (95%CL.) is provided by the tritium β-decay experiments at Mainz and Troitsk using the MAC-E filter technique. The next-generation Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment will push forward into the sub-eV ν-mass region, combining an ultra-luminous molecular windowless gaseous tritium source with a high-resolution electrostatic-retarding spectrometer. If no neutrino mass signal is found, the KATRIN sensitivity after 3 years of measurements is m ν < 0.2 eV (90 %CL.); a ν-mass signal of m ν = 0.35 (0.30) eV can be measured with 5 (3) σ evidence

AbstractAbstract
[en] A large volume 1 300 ton imaging water Cherenkov detector at the pulsed beam dump neutrino source ISIS could detect more than 1 000 νe scatterings and more than 3 000 neutrino-oxygen-16 reactions per year. Designed as a high statistics low energy neutrino experiment the physics motivation of a kton water Cherenkov detector at ISIS is the high sensitivity search for νe → ντ - oscillations in the disappearance mode in the ν - mass range of a few eV as well as the precision measurement of the interference strength of charged and neutral currents in νee scattering. We present first results of detailed Monte Carlo simulations of neutrino - electron scattering and neutrino - oxygen reactions and discuss the physics potential of neutrino electron scattering at ISIS.
