AbstractAbstract
[en] The need to improve the knowledge about the double- or even triple-humped fission barrier initiated a systematic investigation of shape-isomeric decay modes in actinide nuclei. At present, the population and the principle decay mode in odd-A uranium isotopes is of particular interest for improving nuclear reaction models. Neither of both is known today, and different half life systematics give predictions, which range across up to five orders of magnitude. Recently, the IRMM isomer spectrometer NEPTUNE was used to search for the shape-isomer in 235U using the reaction 234U(n, f) at En = 0.95 and 1.27 MeV. For the first time shape-isomeric fission with a tentative half life T1/2 = (4.5 ± 0.3) ms has been observed. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A new spectrometer has been built at the EC-JRC IRMM to investigate isomer decay in the millisecond range and activation cross sections of isotopes, where isomeric states exist and are populated. The spectrometer is equipped with high-resolution gamma-ray detectors and an ionisation chamber for the measurement of charged particles, e.g., fission fragments. NEPTUNE provides pulsed quasi mono-energetic neutrons at pulse repetition frequencies up to 5 kHz and adjustable neutron pulse widths ranging from 10 μs into the ms-region. For this purpose a beam chopper based on a parallel-plate capacitor has been integrated into the accelerator beam line in order to deflect the charged-particle beam onto a tantalum beam dump. First research has been performed with the NEPTUNE spectrometer dedicated to the shape isomer search in the odd-A uranium isotopes 235U, 237U and 239U. The feasibility of measuring (n,xn) cross sections in the presence of spin isomers was demonstrated. The first experimental evidence for the de-excitation of super-deformed shape isomer by γ ray emission in 239U was found. The first experimental confirmation of a shape-isomer in odd-A uranium isotopes was obtained with 235U
