AbstractAbstract
[en] The book about particle detectors gives a survey on the measuring methods, as they are mainly applied in nuclear and particle physics and in experiments in the field of cosmic radiation. The physical foundations for the understanding of the detectors are presented, a detailed derivation of complicated formulas was in most cases abandoned. For the illustration of the application possibilities of particle detectors examples from archeology, astrophysics, cosmic radiation, medicine, and radiation protection are presented. A glossary and a comprehensive key-word list facilitate the fast finding of the ''right'' detector for a special application

AbstractAbstract
[en] We have tested an electromagnetic streamer tube calorimeter in an electron beam in the energy range 1-70 GeV. Also the dependence of the response and energy resolution on the particle rate and magnetic field were investigated. A magnetic field transverse to the streamer tubes has no effect, while a field parallel to the wires deteriorates the energy resolution. (orig.) With 14 figs

AbstractAbstract
[en] The electromagnetic interactions of muons are investigated. The various processes such as knock-on electron-, bremsstrahlung-, direct electron pair production, and nuclear interactions are described in detail. The energy range concerned extends from 109 eV up to 1015 eV for primary muons and from 108 eV up to 1014 eV for energy transfers to the secondaries. On the one hand the measurement of muon interactions represents a test of quantum electrodynamics. On the other hand the high energies available in cosmic rays would possibly lead to the measurement of new processes or the detection of new particles. One hopes to find in the high energy domain the answer to the question why the muon exists at all and if there are properties (apart from differences in mass, lifetime, and lepton number) which distinguish it from a mere heavy electron. The different experimental techniques are described and the various experimental results on muon interactions are presented and compared with relevant QED-theories. Observed deviations between theory and experiment and anomalies in muon interactions are critically investigated and discussed in the light of experimental difficulties and interpretation problems. In general, agreement between theory and experiment is found, i.e. QED-theories describe the results adequately. However, some experiments claim to have detected anomalies in muon physics in the cosmic ray beam. But the hypotheses on new processes and new particles in the high energy range do not withstand a critical analysis. It is concluded that the observed deviations can be understood in the framework of conventional theories. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Radiation protection aspects encompass environmental aspects. This textbook and basic course in radiation protection and health physics sets out the fundamental facts and principles from the angle of physics and biology, as well as the measuring methods applied for detection and identification of the radionuclides used in the fields of medicine, biology, physics, and engineering. In addition, the legal provisions relating to radiation protection are presented in a way easy to understand by readers not belonging to the legal community. Practical aspects of radiation protection are discussed and illustrated by numerous examples, including applications of modern, commercial instruments. The book is intended for students of medicine, biology, physics and the engineering sciences, or professionals dealing with radioactive materials or instruments for the generation of ionizing radiation. The presentation of physical and technical aspects has been designed for beginners' levels. The collection of problems and solutions relating to the practice of radiation protection and health physics in the nuclear or physical laboratory, or radiographic and nuclear medical establishments, will enable readers to check their learning progress. A comprehensive glossary, a useful subject index as well as some annexes presenting significant factual and numeric information round up the textbook. (orig./CB)

(orig.)Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] A jet analysis of the UPSILON-direct decays is presented. The analysis involves both neutral and charged particles. The UPSILON-decay data are best described by a UPSILON→ggg matrix element. A dominantly phase space like or 2 jet decay can be ruled out. A search for flatness of events does not show a significant difference for 'off'resonance or direct decay data. In this sense the UPSILON-direct decay events are not flat

AbstractAbstract
[en] Data taken by a combination of a horizontal solid iron muon spectrograph and an interaction calorimeter have been analysed with respect to the process of inelastic μN-scattering. The muon momentum range covered by the spectrograph extended from 7 GeV/c<=pμ<=1,000 GeV/c. Energy transfers to hadrons between 0.3 GeV<=ν<=10 GeV were recorded. The results at low four-momentum transfers are consistent with precocious scaling. (orig.)

(orig.)Primary Subject
