AbstractAbstract
[en] erical sheshell models without core excitations give in many cases good agreement between theory and experiment. However (a) in order to obtain agreement for the strengths in E2 gamma decay the valence nucleons (or holes) must be given a polarisation charge, and, (b) in many cores low lying levels exist which can not be explained by the simple model, but may be accounted for by, in addition to valence configurations, considering n particle - n hole excitations of the core one shell higher up. The latter gives states often called 'deformed' due to the strong spatial correlation of the particles and the holes. These polarisation and deformation effects are studied in oxygen and calcium isotopes using results from elastic electron scattering and the reactions 42Ca(p,t)40Ca and 18O(p,t)16O. (JIW)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The polarization effects for monopole and quadrupole electron excitations of nuclei in the oxygen region have been considered. A phenomenological method has been used in order to extrapolate empirical values for the polarization charges, from the real photon limit, to higher momentum transfers. It is found that in most cases polarization charges that are nearly constant, for momentum transfers up to 2 or 3 fm-1, thus providing a justification in the oxygen region for the assumption most frequently made when experiment and theory are compared.
