AbstractAbstract
[en] Out of a Langmuir-probe I-V-curve plasma parameters are calculable like mean electron energy, electron density, floating- and plasma potential. The second derivative of this I-V-curve is proportional to the electron energy distribution. However, in reactive plasmas which are useful for industrial applications a falsified characteristic is often measured. This is first caused by capacitive coupling between the probe and the ground potential. Therefore the probe tip is not able to follow the whole RF-amplitude. The non-linearity of the original I-V-curve effects a rectification of the RF-voltage drop between the plasma and the probe. This invalidates the measured I-V-curve and especially its second derivative. Another reason is the coating of the probe by CVD-plasmas which leads to a change of the work function. Further a temporal rising series resistor disturbs the resulting I-V-curve

AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper reports on transesophageal echo computer tomography, a new ultrasonic technique for three-dimensional imaging of the beating heart, comparable with cine CT or dynamic MR imaging. The acquisition of the data sets is performed from a mechanically stiffened distal portion of a modified esophagoscope, which is inserted just behind the heart. This straight portion serves as housing of the transducer, which is pulled back by means of an electrocardiographically triggered step motor, thus delivering exact parallel and equidistant scan planes of the whole cardiac anatomy. At each plane, one complete heart cycle is scanned and stored in the image-processing unit, thereby generating 256 x 256 x 256 x 8 bit isotropic cubic data sets with 33-msec intervals. Dedicated software for dynamic three-dimensional reconstruction allows the computation of any desired tomographic plane, providing unique new views of the beating heart

AbstractAbstract
[en] In responding to the proposal, which has been recurrrent for many years, to build nuclear power plants underground, the German Federal Ministry of the Interior has drafted a study entitled 'Underground Construction of Nuclear Power Plants'. This article reports about one of the contributions to that study. It concentrates about imbedding in the ground, which includes as one variant of underground construction the erection of a nuclear power plant in an open excavation subsequently backfilled. On the basis of complete draft plant concepts the technical feasibility, influences upon the construction time and costs and the impact on safety and the protection potential, respectively, are assessed for more refined costbenefit considerations. AbstractAbstract
[en] In many nuclear medicine departments rest and stress radionuclide angiocardiography (RNA) has become a routine study for patients with coronary heart disease. By contrast, reports on comparable studies for patients with dilatrive cardiomyopathy (DCM) are scarce. In 30 of a total of 88 patients with DCM right and left ventricular function studies at rest were complemented by determination of the left ventricular functional myocardial reserve on exertion. Method: First pass technique using 99m-TcO4 and 195m-Au and a multi-crystal camera. Patients were examined upright 30 degree RAO. After obtaining images at rest ergometer exercising was gradually increased to the patient's individual exercising limit and images were again taken immediately after exercising was terminated. Results were compared to those of a comparable group of patients with myocardial infarction to shed light on the following questions: (1) Is the global response to exercising of the left ventricle in the presence of cardiomyopathy basically the same as that of a ventricle in coronary disease. (2) Does an analysis of regional parameters (regional ejection fraction, rate of regional volume reduction) help to discriminate between these 2 conditions. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Two separate regimes exist for the aspect ratio of DNA. A low aspect regime where DNA will twist further under strain and a high aspect regime where DNA will untwist under strain. The question of the overall geometry, i.e. the aspect ratio, of DNA is revisited from the perspective of a geometrical analysis of transcription. It is shown that under certain reasonable assumptions transcription is only possible if the aspect ratio is in the regime corresponding to further twisting. We find this constraint to be in agreement with long-established crystallographic studies of DNA. (paper)
