AbstractAbstract
[en] The forward inclusive pion double charge exchange reaction, 16O(π-,π+)X, at T0 = 0.50, and 0.75 GeV has been studied in the kinematic region where an additional pion production is forbidden by energy-momentum conservation. The experiment was performed with the SKS spectrometer at KEK PS. The measured ratio of forward double charge exchange cross-section for these energies < dσ(0.50 GeV)/dΩ> / < dσ(0.75 GeV)/dΩ> = 1.7 0.2, disagrees with the value of 7.2 predicted within the conventional sequential single charge exchange mechanism. Possible reasons for the disagreement are discussed in connection with the Glauber inelastic rescatterings

AbstractAbstract
[en] A brief nonanalytic survey of data available in the literature for parameters that characterize nuclear sizes is given, and the potentials of some methods for determining these sizes are compared. Attention is given primarily to determining nuclear sizes in experiments that study pion-nucleus interaction. For pointlike protons and neutrons, values of parameters that describe the radial dependences of their densities according to the Fermi distribution are presented in a tabular form. The method proposed previously at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP, Moscow) for determining nuclear sizes on the basis of measuring differential cross sections for π± + A → πforw± + X processes in the kinematical region where the recorded interaction event occurs on a single proton (neutron) of nucleus A, the presence of the remaining nucleons manifesting itself in shadowing effects, is described, and examples of the application of this method are given

AbstractAbstract
[en] The inclusive pion double charge exchange process (DCX) on nuclei is considered in the framework of the Gribov-Glauber approach. It is shown that inelastic rescatterings related to production of two pions in the intermediate state give an important contribution to DCX at kinetic energies above ∼0.5 GeV. This mechanism dominates at energies > or approx. 1 GeV and allows to explain the weak energy dependence of the DCX cross section observed experimentally

AbstractAbstract
[en] The inclusive pion double charge exchange on nuclei is considered within the Gribov-Glauber approach. It is shown that inelastic rescatterings associated with the production of two (and more) pions in the intermediate state make an important contribution to double charge exchange at kinetic energies above some 0.5 GeV. This mechanism dominates at energies higher than 1 GeV and makes it possible to explain the weak energy dependence of the double-charge-exchange cross section observed experimentally

AbstractAbstract
[en] The program of experiments of the A2 Collaboration performed on a beam of tagged photons of the MAMI electron microtron in Mainz (Germany) includes precision measurements of the total and differential cross sections of the pion photoproduction on neutrons of a deuterium target. The determination of the detector ability to detect neutrons is undoubtedly one of the important problems of the experiment. The calorimetric system of the detector contains a segmented NaI Crystal Ball detector, which gives information about the position, energy, and detection time of neutral and charged particles in a wide angular range. In this work, we describe the measurement of the neutron detection efficiency in the energy range from 20 to 400MeV. The results are compared with BNL data obtained on a pion beam and proton target

AbstractAbstract
[en] The A dependence recently measured in an experiment of our group in full kinematics for quasielastic deuteron knockout by pions revealed that the effective number of quasideuterons in a nucleus is independent of its atomic number. This result differs strongly from the A dependence measured in experiments that studied quasielastic inclusive deuteron knockout by protons, in which case one observes an A0.33 power-law dependence. Calculations performed on the basis of a simple deuteron-knockout model show that stronger absorptive effects in measurements under conditions of full kinematics may indeed lead to this change in the A dependence.

[en] Differential cross sections for nuclear fragment yields at an angle of 3.5° in the fragmentation of carbon ions with an energy of 0.95 and 2.0 GeV/nucleon on a beryllium target have been measured. The momentum spectra of the fragments were used for testing predictions of few models of ion-ion interactions. (paper)

[en] Momentum spectra of all long lived fragments from 12C fragmentation at 3.5 o on different targets have been measured. Obtained fragmentation peak widths are compared with predictions of statistical model. An independence of these widths from target nuclei has been checked with high precision. (paper)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The differential cross sections for the yields of nuclear fragments at an angle of 3.5◦ in the fragmentation of carbon nuclei with energy 0.95 GeV per nucleon on a beryllium target were measured in the FRAGM experiment at the ITEP TWA heavy-ion accelerator. The momentum spectra of fragments were used to test the following four models of ion–ion interactions: BC, INCL++, LAQGSM03.03, and QMD. For light fragments, the slope parameters of the kinetic-energy spectra were obtained in the cumulative region.

AbstractAbstract
[en] Quasielastic deuteron and triton knockout from 12C and 16O nuclei has been studied infull kinematics using a 0.72-GeV/c pion beam. The momentum distributions of the intranuclear quasideuteron motion, excitation-energy spectra of the residual nuclei, and the effective numbers Ndeff of quasideuterons are determined. The parameters of the quasideuteron intranuclear motion are in reasonable agreement with the results obtained in other beams. The Ndeff in the nuclei from 6Li to 16O measured in full kinematics are virtually independent of the atomic number in contrast to the analogous values in the inclusive deuteron-knockout reaction induced by protons. The phenomenon of triton knockout from these nuclei is observed, which makes possible estimation of the cross section of backward pion-triton elastic scattering in yet unexplored regions of energy and momentum transfer
