AbstractAbstract
[en] The densities of total and M1 muscarinic receptors were measured using the muscarinic receptor antagonists 3H-quinuclidinyl benzilate and 3H-pirenzepine, respectively. Thus, the difference between the density of 3H-quinuclidinyl benzilate and 3H-pirenzepine binding sites represents the density of M2 sites. In addition, there is no observable change in either acetylcholine-stimulated phosphoinositide breakdown (suggested to be an M1 receptor-mediated response) or in carbachol-mediated inhibition of cyclic AMP accumulation (suggested to be an M2 receptor-mediated response) in slices of cortex+dorsal hippocampus following chronic atropine administration. In other experiments, it has been shown that the M1 and M2 receptors in rat cortex have different ontogenetic profiles. The M2 receptor is present at adult levels at birth, while the M1 receptor develops slowly from low levels at postnatal week 1 to adult levels at postnatal week 3. The expression of acetylcholine-stimulated phosphoinositide breakdown parallels the development of M1 receptors, while the development of carbachol-mediated inhibition of cyclic AMP accumulation occurs abruptly between weeks 2 and 3 postnatally

[en] The thesis presents and discusses the numerical determination of the strong-coupling effects in the infrated conductivity of superconductors, i.e. of the effects of a strong coupling of electrons to deep-lying excitations such as phonons or spin fluctuations. (orig./MM)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We compute the O (αs3) virtual QCD corrections for the process ,e+e- → qq-barg arising from the interference of the two-loop and tree amplitudes and from the self-interference of the one-loop amplitude. The results are presented in the form of both matrix elements and helicity amplitudes. The calculation of the matrix elements is performed by the direct evaluation of the Feynman diagrams and corresponding loop integrals. The helicity amplitudes are derived in a scheme-independent way from the coefficients appearing in the general expression for the tensorial structure of this process. The tensor coefficients are then extracted from the Feynman diagrams by means of projectors. The one- and two-loop integrals appearing in the amplitudes are reduced to a small set of known master integrals by means of integration-by-parts identities. This reduction has been automated by construction of an algorithm based on that proposed by Laporta. The infrared pole structure of both the matrix elements and helicity amplitudes is shown to agree with the predictions made by the infrared factorisation formula of Catani. The analytic results for the finite terms, regularised in conventional dimensional regularisation and renormalised in the MS-bar scheme, are presented, expressed in terms of one- and two-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms. AbstractAbstract
[en] In December of 1981, we submitted a proposal to Fermilab for a phased approach to electron-proton collisions which could be initiated by the construction of a 5 GeV electron storage ring. Such a machine would allow the implementation of ep physics in the US well before the end of the decade, while also serving as a potential injector for higher energy rings which may then be contemplated. The estimated price tag of $30 M (ring plus detector) is substantially less than that of the 10 GeV ring. This proposal has again met with considerable enthusiasm both from the Fermilab PAC and management. However, concern over possible interference with the startup of the Tevatron I and Tevatron II programs has resulted in a recommendation that such a project should come after anti pp. While the concerns expressed with regard to the availability of operational facilities at the Tevatron are very real, we believe that a schedule which calls for electron-proton collisions at 5 to 10 GeV x 1000 GeV beginning sometime in 1988 is likely to leave US high energy physics in a very unfavorable position relative to the European community. We believe that the best resolution of these competing demands is to plan for the completion of a dedicated 20 GeV x 1000 approx. 2000 GeV electron-proton collider becoming operational at Fermilab at the end of this decade. Our present 5 GeV proposal represents the first stage of such a plan. Collisions for only a few weeks a year beginning in 1986 approx. 1987 with a 5 GeV ring will provide invaluable information and experience for the full scale facility to come up later. To enact such a plan development of a comprehensive design for the high energy electron storage ring must begin immediately. We propose to collaborate directly with Fermilab on the design of a high energy electron-proton collider which would give Fermilab an ep capability before the end of this decade

AbstractAbstract
[en] The purpose of this investigation was to perform an analytical evaluation of a postulated loss of coolant incident in a large pressurized water reactor. A coupled thermal and stress finite element analysis of a fuel rod subjected to a hypothetical blowdown transient was carried out. The effect of two gap conditions and two initial stress states on the response of the fuel rod was studied. Both one-dimensional and three-dimensional models were investigated. To study the heat transfer in the gap region one assumes a conductive mode of heat transfer in the gap characterized by an equivalent thermal conductivity, which is dependent on the current gap width. Accordingly, coupled analysis procedure and computational scheme were established. A mesh generation computer program was developed for the three-dimensional model. The mesh program can be used, with minor modification, to include any degree of ovalization of the clad

AbstractAbstract
[en] A discussion is given of the use of a large aperture double arm spectrometer similar to experiments described in the 1975 ISABELLE Summer Study for high resolution measurements of massive lepton pairs (μ+μ-, e+e-, μ+-e+-) and high p perpendicular to single leptons. The primary objectives of the experiment are to detect the Z0 (weak intermediate neutral boson) and the W+- (weak intermediate charged boson). In addition, one might find very massive stable vector mesons and massive stable hadrons with leptonic or semileptonic decays
