AbstractAbstract
[en] This work provides an overview of the subject of neutrino physics that will be of value to both the serious graduate student and the professional physicist. The authors focus on topics vital to the understanding of the intrinsic properties of neutrinos, which are presented in terms of recent developments in the field and their applications to astrophysics. In a format that integrates neutrino physics and astrophysics data and theory, the authors analyze the predictions generated by various theories and compare those predictions with experimental results. Emphasis is placed on the solar neutrino problem, one of the most exciting areas of physics today. The book also features extensive pedagogical and formal treatments of neutrino oscillations in both vacuum and matter

AbstractAbstract
[en] The reaction K-n → K-π+π-n has been studied in the SLAC 82 in. liquid deuterium bubble chamber with a beam momentum of 12 GeV/c. Although the kinematic fit for this final state has only one constraint, nonetheless a reasonably pure sample has been obtained. The cross section for the reaction is 1.02 +- 0.10 mb. The process K-n → K*0sub(890)Δ- is observed with cross section 36 +- 9 μb and t-slope of 10 +- 2 (GeV/c)-2. A kaon diffraction dissociation sample has been obtained, although the Q-signal is not so strong as in experiments with proton targets. Neutron dissociation into nπ+π- is also observed with similar properties to those of proton dissociation into pπ+π-, but with a broader t-distribution. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The coherent deuteron reactions K-d→K-π+π-d and K-d→K0π-π0d have been studied at 12 GeV/c in the SLAC 82 inch deuterium bubble chamber. The cross section for the first reaction is 312+-30 μb and for the second 270+-50 μb. Resonance signals or enhancements observed are K*sub(890), K*sub(1420), d*, and Q; no clear L-meson signal is seen. In the Kππ system, components with spin >=2 only occur in events with d* production. Helicities in the s- and t-channels are not conserved in Kππ production. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Production of phi and ω mesons has been observed in K+p interactions at 6.8 GeV/c in the final states K+phip, K+ωp, K0π+phip, and K0π+ωp. The first two final states show low-mass enhancements Kphi, Kω, and ωp combinations. The third evidences strong Δ++ production. The fourth is produced through a combination of mechanisms, but shows some evidence for K*(1660) production, with decay to K0ω. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The previously reported K+π-π0 enhancement near 1250 MeV in the final state K+π+π-π0p is observed in a 6.8 GeV/c K+p exposure. It is found that this enhancement decays primarily to uncorrelated Kππ and that production is correlated with forward π+. No signal is seen in the K0π+π+π-p final state where statistics are limited. AbstractAbstract
[en] The production of prompt electron-positron pairs in 16 GeV/c π-p collisions has been measured using the LASS spectrometer at SLAC. An excess of events is observed above the estimated contributions of direct and Dalitz decay of known resonances in the kinematic range defined by 0.1 <= x <= 0.45, 0 Psup(T) <= 0.8 GeV/c and 0.2 <= M(e+e-) <= 0.7 GeV/c2. The excess signal decreases slowly with increasing M, but exhibits very steep x and p2/sup(T) dependence. The contribution of this signal to the e+e-/π+π and γ/π ratios is discussed. Detailed comparisons are made between e+e- distributions and the corresponding low-mass μ+μ- distributions, and a simple production mechanism is proposed which describes the 16 GeV/c data well. The implications for direct photon production are presented, and it is shown that the model provides simultaneously a good description of the experimental data on the (e/π) and (μ/π) ratios for Psub(T) < 1 GeV/c. [en] We report on the characteristics of the proportional tube chamber system which has been constructed for muon identification in the PEP-4 experiment at SLAC. The mechanical and electrical properties of the extruded aluminum triangular tubes allow these detectors to be used as crude drift chambers. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A new calibration technique based on radiative capture of protons from an RFQ accelerator in a lithium target, which makes use of the resultant high intensity flux of 17.6 MeV photons, has been developed and tested. The technique is capable of calibrating the thousands of BGO crystals in the L3 electromagnetic calorimeter at once, with an absolute accuracy of better than 1% in 1-2 h. Systematic errors in the calibration, which have been studied earlier through Monte Carlo simulations, have been experimentally proven to be small and calculable, and are expected to be much less than 1%. When installed in the L3 experiment at LEP, this system will help ensure that the high resolution of the L3 electromagnetic calorimeter is maintained during running. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Results are presented from a search for a rho0rho0 enhancement in antiproton annihilations. A rho0rho0 resonance was recently observed in radiative psi decays, and its existence has been supported by the results of an antiproton experiment at 5.7 GeV/c. No indication of this rho0rho0 enhancement is seen in our data, in direct contradiction with the earlier, lower statistics experiment. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The cross sections for the line-reversed reaction pairs K+n → K0p and K-p → K-bar0n, and K+p → K0Δ++ and K-n → K-bar0Δ- have been determined with high statistics and good relative normalization at 8.36 and 12.8 GeV/c in a spectrometer experiment at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The cross sections for the K+-induced reactions are larger than for the K-, contrary to the expectations of weakly-exchange-degenerate Regge-pole models. The ratio of the reaction cross sections is about the same as at lower energies and shows little change with momentum transfer
