AbstractAbstract
[en] The burn up of 234 low enriched (20 % U 235) uranium fuel plates of the Siemens Argonaut Reactor Graz has been determined by means of a High Purity Germanium detector and a Nal(Ti) scintillation detector from the activity of Cs 137. The efficiency of the Huge detector has been corrected using the Monte Carlo program MCNP Version 4B. The gamma dose rate on the surface of the plates was also obtained by experiment.(author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Currently ICRP (International Commission on Radiological Protection) develops a new recommendation to estimate the natural radiation exposure of an agreed set of animals and reference plants. For estimating effective dose in humans and animals, the incorporated activities of natural and artificial radionuclides in body tissues and contents of the digestive system have to be known. It was the aim of this investigation to calculate energy doses caused by Cs 137 and K 40 in the reproductive organs (uterus, ovaries) of a cow. During its whole lifetime from 1986 to 1992, the cow incorporated continuously Cs 137 which was due to the fallout following the Chernobyl accident. K 40 occurs naturally in the cow's fodder. The cow was born in a highly contaminated region of Styria, Austria, and was infertile since 1990. The activities of Cs 137 and K 40 in the cow's fodder and in tissues, organs and contents of the digestive system of the carcass were measured simultaneously with the help of semiconductor detectors. To calculate the specific absorbed fractions by means of the Monte Carlo code MCNP, an appropriate simulation model for the reproductive organs and their surrounding tissues was developed. The contents of rectum and urinary bladder account for the main part of the energy dose in the reproductive organs. Comparison of our results with data from other investigations showed, that lifetime accumulation of Cs 137 and K 40 was too low to cause radiation inferred infertility. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The activity distributions of Cs 137 and potassium (K 40) have been investigated in all structures which are usually assigned to the skin of a cattle. The cow had ingested heavily contaminated forage following the Chernobyl fallout. It was found that the average activity concentrations of Cs 137 and K 40 in the skin are 33,6 Bq/kg and 18,8 Bq/kg, respectively. The activity concentration of Cs 137 in muscle tissue of the femur is ten times greater than the corresponding value in the skin, whereas the activity concentrations of K40 differ by a factor six.(author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] It is of particular interest to study the distribution of radionuclides in domestic animals after a long-term ingestion of radionuclides. We performed a study to determine the specific activities of Cs-137 and of the naturally occurring K-40 in different tissues, organs and in the gastro-intestinal tract of a cow. As a consequence of the fallout following the Chernobyl accident in April 1986, the cow ingested chronically heavily contaminated forage during four years. It is the aim of these investigations to find out regions of high activity concentrations in the cow and to compare the activity concentrations of Cs-137 and K-40 in the samples of the whole cow. Of particular interest are the activities of radiocaesium in edible tissues (meat) and organs. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Activity concentrations of radon (Rn-222), radium (Ra-226, Ra-228), uranium (U-238), and radiocesium (Cs-137), were determined in 50 water samples from different geogenic regions of Styria/Austria. Samples were collected in the years 2010, 2011 and 2012, by experts of the Styrian government. For measuring activities of U-238 we used a low energy-semiconductor detector, and a high purity-semiconductor detector to analyze the activities of all the other radionuclides. More than 90% of the activity concentrations of Rn-222 in all water samples were lower than 50 Bq/l. All activity concentrations observed for radium and uranium were lower than the detection limits of the corresponding radionuclides (Ra-226: 0,02 Bq/l, Ra-228: 0,03 Bq/l, U-238: 0,06 Bq/l). None of the water samples were contaminated by Cs-137.

AbstractAbstract
[en] In comparison to single intakes it is of particular interest to study the distribution of radionuclides in the body of domestic animals after continuous ingestion of radionuclides. We performed a study to determine the activity concentrations of Cs-137 and of the naturally occurring K-40 throughout the whole gastro-intestinal tract of a cow. The cow was born one year after the fallout following the Chernobyl accident. Therefore the activity level in the cow resulted from the activity originating from the mother-cow and the activity due to chronically ingestion of highly contaminated forage during four years. The cow was slaughtered in November 1992 and dissected in anatomical parts. Samples of the whole digestive apparatus were taken to determine the activities. Further analysis of measured data will be used to develop and to describe models for continuous ingestion
