AbstractAbstract
[en] The author has measured the branching ratio to μ pairs, B/sub μμ/, and the leptonic partial width, Gamma/sub ee/, for the tau and tau'-mesons using the Crystal Ball detector at the e+e- storage ring DORIS II. Using the measurements of Gamma/sub ee/ and B/sub μμ/ the author can calculate the total widths of the tau and tau'. The author assumes lepton universality, B/sub ee/ = B/sub μμ/, and uses the relationship B/sub ee/ = Gamma/sub ee//Gamma/sub tot/. He finds: Gamma/sub tot/(Tau) = (50 +/- 7 +/- 7) keV; Gamma/sub tot/(Tau') = (37 +/- 10 +/- 7) keV. The value of Gamma/sub tot/(Tau') has smaller errors than any other measurement

AbstractAbstract
[en] The ground state rotational band populations for the 4n evaporation channel have been measured at three 16O bombarding energies. The populations for the 4He+166Er reaction, which populates the same residual nucleus at above-barrier energies, have also been measured to calibrate the statistical model which has been used to relate the observed populations to the compound nuclear spin distribution. The mean compound nuclear angular momenta are somewhat less than obtained in a previous gamma ray multiplicity investigation and are in better agreement with coupled channels calculations

AbstractAbstract
[en] Fission fragment anisotropies have been measured to energies extending well above the barrier for three entrance channels leading to the same compound nucleus 248Cf. For the 12C + 236U and 16O + 232Th systems, lying on either side of the Businaro-Gallone critical asymmetry, the mean square angular momentum is matched at an excitation energy of 62 MeV. The anisotropies, although different at lower energies, are in agreement within experimental errors at this excitation energy and thus show no entrance channel dependence. copyright 1996 The American Physical Society

AbstractAbstract
[en] Results on two-particle correlations, deuteron production, event anisotropy and event-by-event fluctuations of < pT> and K/π were obtained by the NA49 experiment in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A·GeV beam energy. The interpretation of the measurements is discussed in light of the search for deconfinement

AbstractAbstract
[en] With its large acceptance and particle identification coverage the NA49 experiment (Fig. 1) can study hadron production in a wide range of high energy reactions [1]. Originally aimed at examining central Pb+Pb collisions for signatures of quark-gluon plasma formation, the scope of the experiment has been enhanced with a systematic study of impact parameter and projectile size dependence, as well as the inclusion of the more elementary p+p and p+A interactions. The question is: are predicted signals of the quark-gluon plasma observed and are there discontinuities which would support the concept of hadronic phase transition?

AbstractAbstract
[en] New data with a minimum bias trigger for 158 GeV/nucleon Pb + Pb have been analyzed. Directed and elliptic flow as a function of rapidity of the particles and centrality of the collision are presented. The centrality dependence of the ratio of elliptic flow to the initial space elliptic anisotropy is compared to models

AbstractAbstract
[en] Measurements of the forward and the transverse energy in 158 GeV per nucleon 208Pb+Pb collisions are presented. A total transverse energy of about 1 TeV is created in central collisions. An energy density of about 3GeV/fm3 is estimated for near head-on collisions. Only statistical fluctuations are seen in the ratio of electromagnetic to hadronic transverse energy. copyright 1995 The American Physical Society

AbstractAbstract
[en] The NA49 detector is a wide acceptance spectrometer for the study of hadron production in p+p, p+A, and A+A collisions at the CERN SPS. The main components are 4 large-volume TPCs for tracking and particle identification via dE/dx. TOF scintillator arrays complement particle identification. Calorimeters for transverse energy determination and triggering, a detector for centrality selection in p+A collisions, and beam definition detectors complete the set-up. A description of all detector components is given with emphasis on new technical realizations. Performance and operational experience are discussed in particular with respect to the high track density environment of central Pb+Pb collisions
