AbstractAbstract
[en] Uptake of 226Ra by the Gramineae (grass, wheat, maize) and the Umbelliferae (carrot, parsley) was determined for the plants growing on sandy soil and sandy loam soil in an open field and in a polyethylene tent. 226Ra was determined in the above ground parts of the plants after washing in distilled water, in the rinse obtained from washing, in roots, in soils and in soluble fraction of total deposition. Results showed that the incorporation of 226Ra in the plants was similar for the open field and in the tent. This indicates that 226Ra enters the plants mainly via the root system. Uptake of this radionuclide by the plants depends mainly on its bioavailability in the soil (concentration of exchangeable 226Ra), whereas it did not directly depend on the total concentration of this radionuclide in the soil. The concentration of 226Ra in various parts of the plants decreased in the order: leaves and stems > roots > grains. Appropriately, in the same order decreased transfer factors. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper presents the results of determination of activity concentration of 238U and 234U in urine samples of people living in Warsaw (capital of Poland) to evaluate background level of these radionuclides excretion rate (mBq day-1). The samples were taken from women and men in age between 3 and 97 years. The results obtained for 238U daily excretion rate were in range 0.44-30.54 mBq day-1 and for 234U in range 0.33-28.61 mBq day-1. 70 % results were below 6 mBq day-1 upper limit recommended by ICRP for non-exposed people (ICRP, ICRP publications No. 23, report of the task group on reference man, 1975). The results are discussed and some conclusions based upon average values were drawn. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Intake with food and water of the natural radionuclides of the uranium and thorium series was determined for adult population of the south-western region in Poland, where in the 1950-ies an exploration of uranium ore was conducted. Concentration of the radionuclides was determined in food products and drinking water and their annual intake was estimated on the basis of the average annual consumption. The intake of 238U, 234U and 230Th occurred mainly with water (33% to 68%), whereas the intake of 232Th, 228Th and 226Ra was mainly with vegetables, potatoes, milk and flour. From the intake and dose coefficients the annual effective doses from the ingested radionuclides were calculated. The total dose was 5.6μSv, of which 74% originated from 226Ra. (author)
