AbstractAbstract
[en] We describe the measurement of the muon-induced neutron yield in liquid scintillator and stainless steel (SS) at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), with the LVD experiment. The Large Volume Detector (LVD) is located in Hall A of the LNGS and is made of 1000 t of liquid scintillator and 1000 t of SS. Using an independent measurement to evaluate the background and with the support of a full Monte Carlo simulation based on Geant4, we measured a neutron yield of (2.9±0.6)×10−4 and (1.5±0.3)×10−3 in liquid scintillator and in stainless steel, respectively

AbstractAbstract
[en] Muon-induced neutrons are ultimate background for all the experiments searching for rare events in underground laboratories. Several measurements and simulations were performed concerning the neutron production and propagation but there are disagreements between experimental data and simulations. In this work we present our Monte-Carlo simulation study, based on Geant4, to estimate the muon-induced neutron flux at LNGS. The obtained integral flux of neutrons above 1 MeV is 2.31 x 10-10 n/cm2/s.

AbstractAbstract
[en] The authors describe the design and performances of a large-area (13 m2) shower detector built for an experiment at the CERN ISR to detect electrons and gamma rays with energies up to 4 GeV. The main characteristics of the detector are: a) linearity of the energy response from 0.5 to 4 GeV; b) good energy, time and space resolutions; c) modularity of the mechanical assembly; d) low cost of construction. AbstractAbstract
[en] In the framework of the study for a large magnetic detector suitable for the physics at a neutrino factory, the data collected with the MONOLITH prototype at the T7-PS facility at CERN has been analyzed. The hadron shower angular resolution for pions followed a 10.4/√E(GeV)+10.1/E law for orthogonally incident particles. For a baseline of 732 km, this performance would allow the rejection of wrong sign muon background at the level of 10-6, and a capability to measure sin θ13 down to 10-3. A preliminary analysis of about 106 downward going muons collected at LNGS is also presented. The readout system upgrade allowed the monitoring of each glass RPC with a granularity of 1 cm2

AbstractAbstract
[en] We describe the performance of a large solid-angle (2 sr) time-of-flight system used in conjunction with the Split Field Magnet spectrometer of the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). The system consists of a hodoscope of 67 scintillator counters, at a distance of about 5 m from the beam intersection. The ISR being a coasting beam machine, contrary to the tightly bunched e+e- machines, the event time is unknown and therefore a special analysis procedure for particle identification is required. We illustrate a powerful statistical method which allows the identification, with more than 90% efficiency, of pions up to about 1 GeV/c, kaons up to about 1.4 GeV/c, and protons up to about 2 GeV/c. [en] A measurement of prompt e+- production in proton-proton collisions at the CERN ISR, for a centre-of-mass energy √s = 62.2 GeV, in an angular range δTHETA = 350 around 900 and over a transverse-momentum range 1.0 GeV/c <= psub(T)sup(*) <= 3.0 GeV/c is reported. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Following a previous work, the comparison of the properties of multihadron systems, produced in high-energy pp reactions, with hadron jets produced in e+e- annihilation, is further extended through the study of the inclusive distributions in the ''reduced'' variable psub(T)/< psub(T)>. A good agreement with e+e- data is found. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The associated production of charm-meson pairs (D0D-bar) has been studied in pp interactions at √s = 62 GeV. Total cross-section estimates are given for different hypotheses on the production distributions. The lowest cross-section estimate corresponds to a ''central'' production model, for both the D0 and the D-bar. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The results of a study of the basic properties of multiparticle systems produced in pp collisions are presented. The experiment was performed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings at root-bar = 62 GeV, using the Split-Field Magnet facility. The key point of the analysis is to remove the leading proton and thus redefine the correct available energy for particle production. Our results show that, taking into account the correct hadronic energy, the multiparticle system produced in pp collisions, at low p/sub T/, have similar properties with respect to the multihadron jets observed in e+e- annihilations

AbstractAbstract
[en] The measurement of the longitudinal-momentum production distribution of the ''beauty''-flavoured baryon ß0sub(b), in the reaction pp → e+ + ß0sub(b) + anything at √s = 62 GeV, shows clear evidence for a leading-baryon effect in ß0sub(b) production. A comparison with the data on ß+sub(c), ß0sub(s) and ß-bar0sub(s) production is also given. (author)
