[en] The search for the Higgs boson was one of the most relevant issues of the final years of LEP running at high energies. An excess of 3σ beyond the background expectation has been found, consistent with the production of the Higgs boson with a mass near 115 GeV/c². At the upgraded TeVatron and at LHC the search for the Higgs boson will continue. At TeVatron Higgs bosons can be detected with masses up to 180 GeV with an assumed total integrated luminosity of 20 fb^-1. LHC has the potential to discover the Higgs boson in many different decay channels for Higgs masses up to 1 TeV. It will be possible to measure Higgs boson parameters, such as mass, width, and couplings to fermions and bosons. The results from Higgs searches at LEP2 and the possibilities for searches at hadron colliders will be reviewed. (orig.)

[en] The Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) have been widely adopted in nuclear and particle physics experiments, for their fast response and other excellent characteristics. To achieve the required signal strength and detection efficiency, sometimes they are operated at a high voltage range. This often challenges the limit of high voltage stability of the detectors. Discharge in gaseous detectors is a complex process and involves several responsible factors. Regions, where the electric field is abruptly changing to a very high value may sometimes induce discharge. We have done a systematic numerical study on the electric field of various micro-mesh structures in COMSOL . Within the same framework, we have developed a 3-dimensional model of discharge in a parallel plate type geometry and then implemented it in a non-resistive Micromegas geometry. The effect of space charge has been taken into account in the calculation. Besides studying the occurrence and development of spark, the model is also useful to study the effects of tuning the geometrical parameters, the effects of gas impurities and different numbers of primary charges.

[en] The Monitored Drift Tube (MDT) chambers for the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) consist of 3-4 layers of pressurized drift tubes on either side of a space frame carrying an optical monitoring system to correct deformations. The full-scale prototype of a large MDT chamber has been constructed with methods suitable for large-scale production. X-ray measurements at CERN showed a positioning accuracy of the sense wires in the chamber of better than the required 20 μm (rms). The performance of the chamber was studied in a muon beam at CERN.
