AbstractAbstract
[en] The workshop on ''Scalar Meson Production at ANKE/COSY'' was held at the Madralin Conference Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences close to Warsaw, Poland, on May 22/23, 2002. The meeting was jointly organized by the Andrzej Soltan Institute for Nuclear Studies (IPJ) and the Institute for Nuclear Physics of the Forschungszentrum Juelich GmbH (FZJ). It was the third in a series of topical workshops of the ANKE collaboration, the first took place at ITEP, Moscow (2000) and the second at PNPI, Gatchina (2001). During the workshop the latest experimental results on the production of a0+(980) resonances in proton-proton interactions, obtained with the ANKE spectrometer at the synchrotron COSY-Juelich, were intensively discussed. 15 scientists from Poland, Russia and Germany joined the workshop and 11 talks were presented. These presentations focussed on yet unpublished data from ANKE, on possible theoretical interpretations of these data, and on future measurements at ANKE. In addition, two talks were given on related experimental results from other facilities (WASA rate at CELSIUS, TAPS rate at AGOR and GSI). (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] An influence of a beam forming system on absorbed dose distributions for electron beams from linear accelerator is studied by a Monte Carlo method. The Monte Carlo method is used in arbitrary, user-defined complex geometries. The following elements of the beam defining system are taken into account is presented Monte Carlo calculations: scattering foils used to flatten radiation fields, a collimator used to limit treatment field and to protect surrounding healthy tissues, an electron applicator used to generate irradiated fields with irregular shapes and a water phantom simulating a patient. The SHOWME code, a modified version of the GEANT3 code, is used to look for characteristic features of absorbed dose distribution and their dependence on various elements of the beam defining system. The calculations are made for 22 MeV primary electron pencil beam incident perpendicularly on a water phantom. (author). 3 refs, 4 figs

AbstractAbstract
[en] The Monte Carlo code ANKE-GEANT is used to simulate experiments with the ANKE spectrometer - an experimental facility for the spectroscopy of products from proton-induced reactions on internal targets, placed in the accelerator ring of the cooler synchrotron COSY of the Forschungszentrum Juelich, Germany. Monte Carlo simulations are needed to determine a detector acceptance, estimate background, understand measured particle spectra. Calculations are also necessary to identify particles and to obtain their energy losses. The Monte Carlo simulations are the only method to reconstruct, without free parameters, momenta of ejectiles using information from scintillation counters and hit wire numbers in multi-wire proportional chambers. AbstractAbstract
[en] Hyperons are produced at COSY in pp collisions. The maximal beam momentum of 3.65 GeV/c allows to measure hyperons Y with masses <1540 MeV/c2 in reactions induced by protons. It is essential that the ANKE spectrometer permits the simultaneous observation of different decay modes: Y→π0Σ0, π-+Σ±, π0Λ, K-p. Indications for a neutral excited hyperon resonance Y0*(1480) have been found in the reaction pp → pK+Y0* → pK+π±X-+. Its parameters are M(Y0*) = (1.480 ± 15) MeV/c2 and Γ(Y0*) = (60 ± 15) MeV/c2 though, since it is neutral, it can be either a Λ or Σ hyperon. On the basis of existing data we cannot decide whether it is a three-quark baryon or an exotic state. The Λ(1405) is a particularly interesting baryonic state because its structure is not yet understood and it is difficult to obtain in quark models. Recent theoretical investigations based on chiral dynamics predict two poles for the Λ(1405). The missing and invariant mass techniques are used to identify the Λ(1405) resonance decaying via Σ0π0. An overview about new results from recent hyperon experiments performed at ANKE/COSY will be presented. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Excited neutral hyperons Y0* produced in the pp → pK+Y0* reaction with a COSY beam momentum of 3.65 MeV/c have masses below 1540 MeV/c2. The ANKE spectrometer allows the simultaneous observation of different decay modes: Y0* → π0Σ0, π∓Σ±, π0Λ, K-p by measuring kaons and pions of either charge in coincidence with protons. We have found indications for a neutral excited hyperon resonance Y0* with a mass of M(Y0*) = (1480 ± 15) MeV/c2 and a width of Γ(Y0*) = (60±15) MeV/c2. The cross section for Y0* is of the order of few hundred nanobarns. It can be either a Σ0 or a Λ hyperon and on the basis of existing data no conclusion could be made whether it is a three–quark baryon or an exotic state. Missing- and invariant–mass techniques have been used to identify the Λ(1405) resonance decaying via Σ0π0. The cross section for Λ(1405) production is equal to (4.5 ± 0.9stat ± 1.8syst) µb. The shape and position of the Λ(1405) distribution are similar to those found from other decay modes, so no support is given to the two-pole model. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The application of a Monte Carlo method to study a transport in matter of electron and photon beams is presented, especially for electrons with energies up to 18 MeV. The SHOWME Monte Carlo code, a modified version of GEANT3 code, was used on the CONVEX C3210 computer at Swierk. It was assumed that an electron beam is mono directional and monoenergetic. Arbitrary user-defined, complex geometries made of any element or material can be used in calculation. All principal phenomena occurring when electron beam penetrates the matter are taken into account. The use of calculation for a therapeutic electron beam collimation is presented.
