AbstractAbstract
[en] Mixed symmetric J/sup π/=1/sup +/ states have been discovered in a large number of nuclei. Three arguments are presented here that the new Ml mode is a rather purely orbital mode: The new mode exhausts a large fraction of sum rule strength, comparison of proton and electron scattering experiments prove the dominance of the orbital over the spin part of the transition matrix element and finally the comparison of (e,e') and (γ,γ') experiments on /sup 156/Gd is used to determine the distribution of orbital Ml strength in this nucleus. Furthermore the systematics of excitation energy and transition strength of the new Ml mode are briefly discussed. Candidates for mixed symmetric J/sup π/=2/sup +/ states in rotational nuclei are presented and the search for the corresponding level in the transitional nucleus /sup 110/Pd is described
