The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a private enterprise owned by the German Government. GIZ implements projects in the field of development cooperation on behalf of its owner - our main commissioning party is the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the European Union and other donors. GIZ is active in over 120 countries worldwide and started operations in Iraq during the humanitarian crisis in 2014 to support refugees, internally displaced people, and their host communities. As a response to the destruction, and loss of economic opportunities and to support the reform process after 2017, GIZ significantly scaled up activities to cover all of Iraq and in various sectors. Together with our partners, we work flexibly to deliver effective solutions that offer people better prospects and sustainably improve their living conditions and towards a future worth living. Our work focuses on three key areas: Reconstruction, Peacebuilding and Governance as well as Economic Development and Life Perspectives. To accomplish our goals, GIZ employs a large number of Iraqi and international experts. We also cooperate with local or international civil society and international organisations as well as specialised service providers from the private sector. All our projects are implemented in partnership with the Iraqi Government or the Regional Government of the Kurdistan Region. The registered offices of GIZ are in Bonn and Eschborn (Germany). Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a critical issue in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region (KRI). At GIZ, we are dedicated to GBV through both prevention and protection measures. The prevention of GBV can take many different facets and shapes. Therefore, we use a variety of approaches that help tackling the root causes: 🚀 We collaborate with female Iraqi journalists to amplify women’s voices and challenge harmful social norms that may lead to GBV and recognise the important role of the media in shaping public opinion towards promotion of women's rights and violence prevention. 🚀 We make use of the power of art and sports to bring people together, to listen to each other and to create safe and brave spaces for support and community cohesion. 🚀 We believe in the energy and dreams of the Iraqi youth and thereby support this new generation to know their rights and tools of peaceful conflict resolution. Finally, we focus on working with men, boys and power holders to engage them as important allies in the fight against GBV. In addition to that, we also believe that protection is equally important. Therefore, we are changing the narrative by putting survivors at the heart of everything we do. Using a survivor-centred approach based on safety, respect, confidentiality, and non-discrimination, we ensure survivors’ voices guide every step of our work. Together, we’re closing gaps in support and strengthening communities to combat GBV. #EndGBV #16DaysOfActivism #SPACE #ViolencePrevention #SurvivorCentered #Protection Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

This week, we were part of the high-level commemoration of 24 years of UNSCR 1325 in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), which also marked the official kick-off of the annual campaign “16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence” in KRI. During the celebration, GIZ was recognised as one of the important partners of state and non-state actors that work towards the implementation of Iraqi National Action Plan and the KRI Action Plan for the WPS Agenda, as well as for our contribution to strengthening the participation of women. “We are grateful that, over the past five years, we were able to be part of this journey towards the implementation of UNSCR 1325”, Susan Leichtweiss, Head of Programme of SPACE, the only GIZ-implemented project in Iraq that has gender equality as its main goal, said on the panel. She highlighted the important role of cooperation of all stakeholders to achieve the goals of UNSCR 1325, to end violence against women and girls and to achieve equality between men and women in the country. She also emphasised that Iraq was the first country in the MENA region to have their own national action plans for the implementation of the UNSCR 1325 and appreciated the broad buy-in from all actors in Government and civil society. With a variety of measures, GIZ has since 2019 supported stronger participation of and more equality for women in politics, the economy and society. This included, amongst others, trainings for Frontline Responders from the KRI Government on how to use technology to better respond to the needs of survivors of violence against women, trainings for almost 3000 Yazidi women inside and outside of the camps in Dohuk on income generation, language, life skills and technology to support their economic and livelihood empowerment, and the strengthening of the Social Work Program of both Salahaddin and Sulaymaniyah Universities. #16DaysOfActivism #EndGBV #SPACE #EqualParticipation #ViolencePrevention #Protection Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

Violence against women is unfortunately still widespread. Women are all too often marginalised and have limited access to rights, resources and representation. That is why we strengthen the role of women in society - amplifying their voice. We promote their skills and prospects and work toward enhancing positive dynamics within societies and families. Today, we highlight initiatives like Nurturing Families, a psychosocial support programme we developed, which is currently being implemented by INTERSOS - Humanitarian Organization and Green Desert in Erbil and Nineveh. This programme brings families together—men, women, and children—to promote positive communication within families and to strengthen families’ own problem-solving capacities. By involving men as active participants, Nurturing Families fosters more equitable relationships and thereby also helps build stronger, healthier dynamics within homes. We believe that this is also a key to counteracting inter-familial violence. #EndGBV #16DaysOfActivism #MHPSS #ViolencePrevention Learn more about the Nurturing Families initiative here: https://lnkd.in/dBGu_Djd

Gender-based violence remains one of the most serious human rights violations in Iraq and one of the main barriers for women’s equal participation. We use innovative approaches to combat gender-based violence and provide safe spaces for women and girls. We work on preventive measures to tackle the root causes of violence, enhance protection mechanisms for survivors and support advocacy efforts to end violence against women and girls. 🚀 Together we can create a future where women and girls can live free from violence. #16DaysOfActivism #EndGBV Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

In Essian Camp, trash often ends up in the streets. Originally set up to offer temporary shelter for Iraqis who had to leave their homes, the camp lacks proper infrastructure for dealing with trash. How can the problem be solved? With 70% of the trash consisting of organic materials, there is an opportunity for composting. When people separate their waste, organic materials can be collected and composted using the solar-powered ECOBOT. This benefits everyone: those who collect organic waste and turn it into fertiliser gain employment, farmers can use the fertiliser to boost their yields, and people in Essian Camp live in a cleaner, more pleasant environment. After our partners CARE Deutschland e.V. and The Lotus Flower trained and engaged residents to use the ECOBOT through a cash-for-work programme, the municipality now employs them to maintain the system. #SkillDevelopment #EmploymentProspects Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

People with disabilities play an important role in society and bear an often-untapped potential for local communities. To support them participating, GIZ supported the Mosul District Working Group also known as Mosul Team in organising a two-day festival for raising awareness. Under the slogan “Our strength creates wonders”, adults and children with disabilities confidently practiced theatre, music, art, and dance. Simultaneously, they and their accompanying families exchanged ideas with representatives from local government, civil society organisations and institutions focusing on supporting people with special needs. Our support to the Mosul Team is part of a by-now four years lasting initiative that we provided to five District Working Groups throughout Nineveh, including Telkaif, Tel Afar, Sinjar and Hamdaniyah. More than 100 people make up these District Working Groups - from local authorities, civil society and the private sector to tribal leaders, youth and early career media professionals. They work together to strengthen relationships in the community for lasting peace in Nineveh. #Inclusion #Peace #CommunityResilience #SocialCohesion #Nineveh Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

250 banking professionals from across Iraq are now experts in credit analysis and risk management. Congratulations! After completing training courses from June to October and passing a final exam, they are now internationally certified as "Credit Analysts" and "Risk Management Experts." To foster economic development outside the oil sector, we are working on developing Iraq’s financial markets. As part of these efforts, GIZ supports the expansion and facilitation of bank lending to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). To help banks leverage these opportunities by understanding SME-specific business models and performance indicators, we have partnered with the Central Bank of Iraq and the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management to develop courses tailored to their needs. The journey does not end here. Recognising the value added, the Central Bank and Frankfurt School of Finance plan to scale up the courses to allow more professionals to gain comprehensive skills in line with the highest international standards. Up next: a course focusing on digital banking.
