This week, we were part of the high-level commemoration of 24 years of UNSCR 1325 in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), which also marked the official kick-off of the annual campaign “16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence” in KRI. During the celebration, GIZ was recognised as one of the important partners of state and non-state actors that work towards the implementation of Iraqi National Action Plan and the KRI Action Plan for the WPS Agenda, as well as for our contribution to strengthening the participation of women. “We are grateful that, over the past five years, we were able to be part of this journey towards the implementation of UNSCR 1325”, Susan Leichtweiss, Head of Programme of SPACE, the only GIZ-implemented project in Iraq that has gender equality as its main goal, said on the panel. She highlighted the important role of cooperation of all stakeholders to achieve the goals of UNSCR 1325, to end violence against women and girls and to achieve equality between men and women in the country. She also emphasised that Iraq was the first country in the MENA region to have their own national action plans for the implementation of the UNSCR 1325 and appreciated the broad buy-in from all actors in Government and civil society. With a variety of measures, GIZ has since 2019 supported stronger participation of and more equality for women in politics, the economy and society. This included, amongst others, trainings for Frontline Responders from the KRI Government on how to use technology to better respond to the needs of survivors of violence against women, trainings for almost 3000 Yazidi women inside and outside of the camps in Dohuk on income generation, language, life skills and technology to support their economic and livelihood empowerment, and the strengthening of the Social Work Program of both Salahaddin and Sulaymaniyah Universities. #16DaysOfActivism #EndGBV #SPACE #EqualParticipation #ViolencePrevention #Protection Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)
