Historic moment for women in Congo! 🙏 Recently, Judith Suminwa Tuluka was appointed as the first female Prime Minister of Congo, a moment of hope and inspiration for women in this country. Hope that is desperately needed in a nation torn apart by warring rebel groups and where sexual violence against women remains a shocking reality. Under the banner of the MAnU 2.0 program (‘Mwanamke, Amani na Usalama’, or ‘Peace, Women, and Security’), we, on behalf of Mensen met een Missie, in collaboration with CARE, SPR and several Congolese and Burundi based partners, work on the participation of women in both Congo and Burundi. The appointment of Judith Suminwa Tuluka is a significant moment to bring the urgent need for women's rights and gender equality back onto the political agenda. Although Congo has legislation regarding gender equality, it is not implemented, and men and women are still not seen as equals. For instance, women still cannot directly inherit land and face many (financial) obstacles in attaining (political) leadership positions. On 18 and 19 July 2024, MAnU's partners together with Cordaid RDC organised a meeting in Goma, DRC, where a lobby message on women's rights was presented and validated by various national partners. They made an appeal towards the government for the establishment, of an inter-ministerial committee and a national council for gender and equality to oversee the implementation of gender equality legislation. The presence of a legal expert from the Ministry of Gender and Family, was of great help to feed into the development of a draft decree to be presented to the Prime Minister very soon. With this collaborate effort a very important step is taken towards an equal Congo! 🙌 In the coming months, the MAnU 2.0. partners will travel to the government in Kinshasa to present their shared lobby and advocacy message to the new Prime Minister. Happy International Women Day, invest in women is this year theme of International Women's Day 2024 is “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”. This theme highly emphasises the critical role of investing in women's education, economic empowerment, healthcare, and the development of leadership to accelerate progress towards gender equality. IWD for Sudanese women has come in the realm of a devastating war that kept escalating since April 15, 2023. – women are subjected to brutal and widespread use of rape and other forms of sexual violence and sexual slavery that constitute both war crimes and crimes against humanity, committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). These atrocities have been documented by the UN OHCHR and the Final Report of the Panel of Experts constituted in accordance to resolution 2676 (2023) as well as those crimes still widely committed in Gezira state and its villages at a large scale. Let’s pray that those accountable to such atrocities are held accountable without impunity. That all UNSCRs are ensured in any discussions or mediations regarding all political or humanitarian interventions related to Sudan.

Had a fantastic conversation on AITnews/The Weekend Show with the incredible host, Andrew Agbo-Madaki, actress and women’s health advocate Ini Dima-Okojie and Sports Presenter, Jimmie Akinsola about the urgent need to empower women and girls in Nigeria. We discussed the importance of creating an environment where women can thrive, make their own choices, and contribute fully to our nation's progress. As Nigeria celebrates a pivotal moment with over 60% female representation at the Olympics, it's clear that investing in women is key to our nation's success. At Gatefield where women make up over 70% of our workforce and management, we’re committed to empowering women and positive change happen. My two takeaways: 1. We need to change the narratives about women and their place in society until we create new norms and entrench gender equality as a society. 2. We need more champions and allies (men and women) demanding and holding leaders accountable for women’s economic opportunities and demanding more seats at the table for women in decision-making. ✨ Spotlight Series: Finalist 2 - Finland ✨ Finland’s Women, Peace, and Security National Action Plan (2018-2021) Finland’s third National Action Plan (NAP) on Women, Peace, and Security strengthens gender equality in conflict prevention and peacebuilding by promoting women’s participation in peace processes, integrating gender perspectives across security sectors, protecting women and girls in conflict zones, and involving men and boys in the peace process - recognising gender equality as a shared responsibility. Aligned with UN Security Council Resolution 1325, this NAP builds on previous plans while addressing emerging global security challenges, exemplifying Finland’s leadership in the Women, Peace, and Security agenda. With active civil society involvement, it offers an inclusive and forward-thinking framework, providing an inspiring model for nations seeking to integrate gender perspectives into peace and security initiatives. ✨ Key Impacts:   1. Strengthening women’s leadership in peace efforts: In Nepal, nearly 24,500 women have received leadership support through initiatives by Finland and UN Women. 2. Advancing gender balance in crisis management: Nearly 40% of Finnish seconded personnel were women in 2023, up from 33% in 2019. 3. Educational impact in crisis zones: Finnish-backed projects reached almost 1.1 million children and young people from 2019 to 2021, with 48% of beneficiaries being girls.
