I’ve had an incredible 9 days at Worcester College, Oxford attending the Global Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb). This course is perfect for experienced disputes lawyers looking to advance their careers in international commercial arbitration, particularly as arbitrators. Over 9 intensive days (8 hours a day!), we delved deep into substantive and procedural aspects of international commercial arbitration, including the UNCITRAL Model Law, the New York Convention, conflict of law issues, and best practices for arbitrators. We also explored specialized areas such as construction arbitration, investment arbitration, energy arbitration and expert sessions from ICC and ICSID representatives. A heartfelt thank you to our course director, Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abdel Wahab C.Arb, FCIArb for his exceptional leadership, unmatched teaching style, for assembling an amazing cohort of 30 lawyers from 26 different jurisdictions (more on this in a separate post) and for bringing together leading arbitration professionals from around the world to deliver excellent subject-specific sessions. I am equally grateful to the brilliant tutors - Athina Fouchard Papaefstratiou, Fahira Brodlija, Amr Omran, Kabir Duggal, Ph.D., Ann Ryan Robertson and others for generously sharing their knowledge and time with us. As part of the course, we were also extended the privilege of access to The Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford - home to some of the best research resources in the world! These past 9 days have been one of the most intellectually stimulating experiences of my career. The experience was amplified by the surreal beauty of Worcester College grounds and gardens and the atmospheric vibe of Oxford! (Just look at the pictures!) I sincerely thank the brilliant team at Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) for putting together the last 9 days at Oxford and ensuring that we had an absolute blast! Post these 9 days of in-person sessions, in the coming months we move on to writing multiple assignments, an exemption test, a dissertation and an arbitral award! Wish me luck! #onwardsandupwards #internationalarbitration #investinyourself #professionaldevelopment
