Time flies! It has already been five amazing years since we launched our brand AFRY! Five years as AFRY. Five years of being brave, devoted, and most of all, true team players with a mission to accelerate the transition towards a sustainable society. The story behind AFRY • In 2019 ÅF and Pöyry joined forces and became AFRY. The ambition was to bring the best out of the companies into a new brand. • The name is a combination of the letters in ÅF and Pöyry: AF+RY. • The symbol is inspired by a paper plane; creativity, engineering, and design in one shape. • The AFRY brand won the award for Strategic Design 100W • Today AFRY is a well-known brand. In our biggest market, over 80% of our target group knows about AFRY. • Today we are a global team of 19,000 colleagues speaking more than 50 languages, and with projects in 100 countries. At AFRY our engineering goes beyond calculations, construction, and coding. It’s as much about supporting each other. A helping hand, an uncompromised knowledge sharing, or a colleague reaching out to say, ‘You’ve got this!’ Join us in celebrating and Making Future! Durable Carbon Removal & Corporate Claims in the Era of Article 6. On Saturday in Baku, we organised a panel moderated by Henrik Tegnér about Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which regulates mechanisms for cooperation between countries and global trading with emission reductions. This panel delved into the findings in the newly published paper “Durable Carbon Removal & Corporate Claims in the Era of Article 6” authored by Dr Injy Johnstone at Oxford Sustainable Finance Group, Tomas Thyblad at Nasdaq, and Mostyn Brown at AFRY. Some of our key takeaways from the panel: 🌍 Carbon removals will play an important role but should not be an alternative to reductions in your own value chain. 🤝 Article 6 is about relations between countries, but we know that the private sector will be making most of the investments, including in removals. 🔒 We need to ensure that permanent removals are sufficiently permanent. The white paper and the panel further explored "corresponding adjustments", a mechanism to avoid double counting in more than one country or company, and discussed how to ensure companies can still participate in the carbon removals market. Many thanks to a very competent panel and for a great discussion Tomas Thyblad, Dr Injy Johnstone, Pedro Martins Barata. #cop29 #makingfuture

AFRY has presented a study commissioned by Assocarta, outlining a net-zero roadmap for Italy's pulp and paper sector. The study, "Competitive Decarbonisation of the Italian Paper Sector," details the steps needed to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, including a 70% reduction in emissions by 2030. Key findings: 📊 Improved efficiency ⚡ Electrification and transition to low-carbon fuels 🔄 Utilisation of local resources like biomass and syngas 🏭 Decarbonisation of cogeneration plants with biomethane and CCS 🍃 Accelerated investments in green energy "Our study highlights the critical steps needed for the pulp and paper sector to achieve decarbonisation while maintaining competitiveness. In this project, we combined our in-depth expertise across energy, industrial processes, sustainability, and regulatory and market dynamics, demonstrating AFRY’s unique ability to integrate knowledge across sectors and deliver impactful, sustainable solutions. We are well prepared to assist companies in this vital transition," said Riccardo Siliprandi, Senior Principal at AFRY Management Consulting. 💨 The role of natural gas as a transition fuel in bridging the energy gap. 💨 The global energy landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. Achieving global net zero by 2050 requires a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy, which comes with challenges during the transition phase. But natural gas is considered a transitional fuel due to its lower carbon footprint compared to coal.  Recent geopolitical events, including Russia’s war on Ukraine, have elevated the role of natural gas, particularly from the Middle East and the growing Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) production and exports from the US. ➡️ In the Fossil Detox Report, we have identified natural gas as transition fuel. On Friday, we hosted a panel at COP29 with the theme: A Year After COP28: Unpacking the Energy Transition and What's Next. Some important key outcomes from COP28 were to triple renewable energy, double energy efficiency and transition away from fossil fuels. This panel assessed our progress and identified critical implementation gaps. Together with an excellent panel consisting of Vattenfall, Volvo Group, Ingrid Capacity, BNP Paribas and International Energy Agency (IEA) we discussed the need for public acceptance for the existing technological solutions. We need to tell the story about all the positive aspects of the transition, one obvious being clean air. IEA gave us an optimistic global picture where electric vehicles increased 25% and solar power doubled last year, and is projected to increase another 30% this year. So, many positive news, but we know that the acceleration is going too slowly. To speed it up we need the key enablers to be set right and to be aligned within: policy, finance and innovation. What was more discussed during the panel was the need for consistent policy, investments in grids and digitalisation of the energy network, quicker permitting processes and developed storage solutions. Thanks to Thomas Spencer (IEA), Annika Ramsköld (Vattenfall), Constance Chalchat (BNP Paribas), Axel Holmberg (Ingrid Capacity), Karin Svensson (Volvo Group) for an insightful discussion! 🌍 AFRY at ReBuild Ukraine This week AFRY participated in the ReBuild Ukraine conference and exhibition held in Warsaw, showcasing our commitment to supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts, particularly in the energy sector. The energy, engagement, and forward-looking spirit were truly remarkable. With decades of experience and ongoing projects in Ukraine, AFRY is well-represented by our local office and dedicated colleagues, Oksana and Katazina. Their deep understanding of the local needs, business, and financial environment ensures that we are well-equipped to contribute effectively to Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts. To promote the reconstruction of critical energy infrastructure, we organised and attended several side events during the conference with the Finnish and Swedish delegations. Our discussions focused on: - Rebuilding Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure and short-term project demands - How to cooperate with and leverage Ukraine’s extensive knowledge and experience - Addressing the challenges cities face We would like to thank the organisers of the Swedish and Finnish pavilions and everyone who visited our stand and participated in our side events for the insightful discussions and opportunities!

Much of the technology and the needed innovation is in place, we can decarbonise many sectors already today. So, what is standing in the way? That was the theme for our panel session on COP29 yesterday. Henrik Tegnér, Head of strategy and sustainability at AFRY, presented highlights from our Fossil Detox Report and the key enablers to accelerate the transition. The presentation was followed by a discussion where the panelists shared their view on innovation as a tool for scaling and deploying existing technology faster and what needs to be done. Here is a short summary. ⬇️ Thanks to panelists Martin Edlund, Minesto, Lauren Uppink Calderwood, Ørsted, Jennie Cato♦️, Scania Group, and moderator Daniel Duma, SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute, and all attendees for joining us. OFFICIAL LAUNCH AT COP29: ClimateView Opens Access to the Transition Element Framework (TEF) 🌍 In the global response to climate change, the gap between scientific knowledge and practical, effective action remains a critical challenge. Built on the foundation of IPCC climate mitigation strategies and supporting the EU taxonomy, the Transition Element Framework (TEF) bridges this gap. By converting complex climate data into a structured, open-source framework, governments can use TEF to plan, measure, and implement decarbonisation efforts with clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).   The TEF has been developed together with actors from multiple levels of government and different geographies and is actively applied across a large number of cities and regions in Europe and North America. Learn more about the Transition Element Framework here: https://lnkd.in/dPGNfvXV #ClimateAction #Decarbonization #TEF #ClimateView #SustainableCities #COP29 #transitionelementframework
