Heat is a growing concern for many cities worldwide, and is intensifying the effects of the 'urban heat island' climate phenomena. Talking to Financial Times, our very own urban heat expert Dimple Rana shared how Arup is helping cities combat this growing issue. From developing effective mitigation and adaptation strategies to creating innovative digital tools like UHeat, we’re working to accurately assess heat in urban environments and model impactful design interventions. Oita’s new hovercraft terminals on the Japanese island of Kyushu cut the travel time to and from the city by 50%. We collaborated with Oita Prefecture and Sou Fujimoto Architects to design resilient and sustainable terminal buildings, in both the airport and Oita city, and a boatyard. By blending traditional Japanese construction with advanced engineering, we designed the structures to be elegant and resilient to tsunamis and typhoons. The design incorporates locally sourced Japanese cedar and traditional timber construction techniques to minimise the need for additional steel fixings. How can Australia unlock the full potential of offshore wind energy? We collaborated with the UK Government to uncover opportunities for investing in Australia’s offshore wind market. Our analysis showed notable gaps in Australia’s supply chain for local offshore wind development, including transport services, operational support facilities and technical training. We uncovered opportunities for the UK, the world’s second-largest offshore wind market, to invest in Australia’s emerging offshore wind market, including component exports, specialist skills and knowledge to foster a robust supply chain. Hard infrastructure alone isn’t enough—we need to bring nature back into cities. I recently spoke with the Financial Times about how integrating green infrastructure can help build resilience while also improving quality of life. It’s time to rethink how we design urban spaces to work with nature rather than against it. We are celebrating 25 years of Arup in the Netherlands! From a small team in the year 2000 to 250 passionate professionals today, we have made a lasting impact through innovation and collaboration. From renovating and extending the lifespan of key Dutch bridges, restoring national landmarks, transforming stations into dynamic mobility hubs to designing innovative and energy positive buildings. Our projects showcase what is possible when we work together for a sustainable future. A special thanks to the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam for featuring in our anniversary video and for the opportunity to continue our relationship—an honour to collaborate on preserving such an iconic Dutch landmark. Our gratitude goes to our dedicated team, our visionary clients, Group Leader Tudor Salusbury and Joop Paul, who laid the foundation of our business in the Netherlands. The Ragon Institute of Mass General Brigham, MIT, and Harvard's new research facility is a hub for life-saving discoveries, designed with sustainability in mind. Collaborating with PAYETTE, we worked with user groups to design thoughtful spaces responsive to their research needs. We provided integrated engineering services across the 30,000m² (320,000 ft²), six-floor facility, which includes laboratories, a children’s daycare centre, offices, seminar rooms, gardens and public spaces. The facility is engineered to minimise vibration, safeguard research from climate-related events, and surpass industry energy efficiency standards. How can waste power local neighbourhoods? The North London Heat and Power Project is investing in a replacement energy recovery facility with capacity to divert 700,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste from landfill each year and generate electricity equivalent to the power needs of 127,000 homes. We supported the North London Waste Authority's project planning process, securing support from local communities and conservation groups. The firm continues to advise the authority in the delivery stage of the development, providing multidisciplinary programme and project management services. The development includes a resource recovery facility that features a roof-mounted array of 2,235 photovoltaic panels – the largest in north London – and a 300,000-litre rainwater storage system.
