Erre Quadro nasce per iniziativa di alcuni ricercatori e professori decisi a occuparsi di innovazione, portando nel mondo industriale i metodi originali sviluppati in ambito accademico. Fin dall'inizio il gruppo di lavoro è stato caratterizzato da una forte interdisciplinarità; ciascuno dei membri fondatori è di per sé una figura di eccellenza nel proprio settore, ma è grazie alla collaborazione e alla integrazione fra competenze e punti di vista differenti che il team riesce a sviluppare idee e approcci veramente innovativi. Nel tempo il gruppo si è allargato ed è attualmente costituito da circa venti elementi fra senior e junior, con competenze di ingegneria (meccanica, robotica, gestionale), informatica, fisica, matematica ed economia. Anche l’assetto organizzativo è stato scelto per garantire la massima flessibilità. I progetti di ricerca vera e propria sono gestiti all'interno della realtà universitaria. Una volta raggiunta la fase di maturità della tecnologia sviluppata, o per tutte le declinazioni applicative, l’aspetto più propriamente imprenditoriale è affidato invece ad Erre Quadro, assimilabile per concezione ad uno spin-off universitario ma indipendente sotto ogni punto di vista. Questa struttura mista permette inoltre di avviare collaborazioni internazionali, e di far convergere sui progetti di ampio respiro il supporto istituzionale, tramite la partecipazione a progetti regionali ed europei.
