Who we are: EDS is a non-for-profit organization for individual and corporate members including universities, companies, research institutes, government agencies and all concerned with and interested in desalination, water reuse technologies and solutions. Objectives: Promoting awareness of the true value of water and its augmentation by desalination Encouraging research, development, and appropriate use of desalination technology and water reuse Exchanging, promoting, communicating and disseminating information Encouraging and promoting environmentally responsible and efficient use of the technology Cooperating and communicating with national and international, government and private agencies in the promotion of desalination and water reuse technologies Promoting European business development in desalination, water reuse and related technologies

today, , December 18th, 2024, I had the privilege of attending a captivating webinar presented by the esteemed Miriam Balaban from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The webinar, titled "My Journey in Desalination and Water Treatment," provided a comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities in the field of water sustainability.I was particularly impressed by Balaban's passion and dedication to addressing the global water crisis. Her insights into the latest research and development in desalination and water treatment were enlightening. The webinar provided a valuable opportunity to expand my knowledge and understanding of this critical field. I am eager to apply the insights gained from this webinar to my own work and contribute to the development of sustainable water solutions.

There is no award that could fully encompass Professor Miriam Balaban's immense contributions to the desalination industry. I am particularly grateful to Miriam for being my mentor during the early phase of my career. She encouraged me to deliver training courses, which we successfully conducted with the European Desalination Society (EDS) for 15 years, and to stand for the position of EDS President, a role I took on in 2004. She published my books on desalination economy. Together, we established the EDS Sydney Loeb Award for Innovation, a milestone that underscores her visionary leadership. Most of all we had always a lot of fun! Miriam is an iconic figure in our industry and beyond—a true role model for anyone willing to invest energy, hard work, dedication, and love in what they do. Last night, at the remarkable age of 97, Miriam shared with me her plans to contribute to the development of innovative ideas at the upcoming EDS conference in Portugal. Reflecting on my 40 years of knowing her, I can say she never sought awards, yet she received many. She never focused on success, yet her initiatives were always consistently vibrant and successful. This is a lesson for all of us: remain committed to your goals and to your dreams, enjoy your work and recognition will inevitably follow. Thank you, Miriam, for your enduring inspiration. Way to go!
