The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) is inviting stakeholders to apply to the working group on primary producers, a new initiative focused on addressing challenges faced by primary producers in implementing circular bio-based solutions. The group aims to ensure that the agricultural, forestry, and fisheries sectors benefit from their involvement in innovative bio-based value chains while contributing to sustainability and economic growth. #PPWR, packaging and packaging waste regulation, takes effect today! Among other measures, by 2030, all packaging must be recyclable, emphasising mono-material designs like single-layer films to simplify the recycling process. The exact criteria defining “recyclability” will be elaborated in a delegated regulatory act. And there's also news for bio-based plastics: it is now for the first time possible that there will be obligatory targets for bio-based plastic content in any application in the European market, potentially increasing demand to a significant extent. The Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) and the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI) partnered up in an extensive modelling project which investigated how much biomass might be sustainably available for the chemical and derived material industries. News from sister projects, and this time it is #PEFerence! This Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) funded initiative co-organised the first PEF World Congress in October 2024. The world’s first international conference on PEF (polyethylene furanoate) brought together over 80 industry experts from 18 countries in Düsseldorf, Germany. 🏭 Highlights include: ✅ Insightful discussions on PEF’s potential as the next big biobased polymer ✅ The grand opening of Avantium’s flagship plant, marking a major milestone for PEF production ✅ Global perspectives, with significant progress in Europe and China A lively panel discussion featuring Silvia Maltagliati (EU Commission) sparked debates on regulatory frameworks, level playing fields, and challenges for biobased industries.
