  • ➡️ The NRC report “Toward local humanitarian engagement: Reflections on engaging local partners in hard-to-reach areas”, in collaboration with the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, examines how international NGOs and local organizations can improve collaboration in hard-to-reach (H2R) areas, drawing from case studies in Cameroon, Lebanon, Ukraine, and Venezuela. 📌 The report finds out that humanitarian access in volatile environments is fluid and influenced by various factors. Local organizations are crucial for accessing H2R areas but often face challenges maintaining neutrality due to local political pressures. 📌While international NGOs rely on local partners, their relationships are often transactional, which can undermine long-term cooperation. Trust between international and local organizations is fragile, and national authorities' mistrust of the humanitarian sector further complicates localization efforts. 📌Among the key recommendations provided by the report, to improve localisation, donors must reassess their internal processes, allowing for greater risk-taking and enabling more direct funding for national stakeholders, especially in insecure and politicized settings. #localization #humanitarianaid #stakeholderengagement https://lnkd.in/d-9FfhGw

  • 📝 The Berghof Foundation’s report, Peacebuilding and Disinformation: Taking Stock and Planning Ahead, explores how peacebuilders are addressing the growing challenge of disinformation. 💡 The report highlights the unique skills of peacebuilders—conflict analysis, mediation, dialogue, and reconciliation—that can be crucial in addressing not only the symptoms of disinformation but also its deeper, root causes. Key strategies employed include media literacy training, storytelling campaigns, reconciliation programs, and trust-building in institutions. Case studies, like those from Policy and Mercy Corps, show how peacebuilders are tackling disinformation through context-specific efforts. The report offers seven recommendations: ➡️ Adopt systems-based strategies for cross-sector collaboration. ➡️ Leverage cognitive science to address the root causes of disinformation. ➡️ Implement gender-transformative approaches, focusing on women and marginalized groups. ➡️ Integrate disinformation strategies into broader peacebuilding efforts. ➡️ Decolonize disinformation work by investing in local practices. ➡️ Advocate for tech platform reforms to reduce disinformation amplification. ➡️ Design new prosocial tech platforms in partnership with technologists. #information #peacebuilding #humanitarianaid https://lnkd.in/d-tT25Et

  • 🌍 The latest Humanitarian Access Overview by ACAPS highlights the increasing challenges faced by humanitarian workers and the populations they serve across the globe. Between June–November 2024, 36 countries faced extreme humanitarian access constraints, making it difficult for affected communities to meet their basic needs. 📊 The Global Humanitarian Access Index, based on nine key variables, reveals a complex landscape: 20% of countries saw a deterioration in access levels. 14% experienced improvements. 66% remained stable, yet stability often means ongoing severe access restrictions. Despite this, violence against personnel, facilities, and assets has emerged as a critical indicator of access challenges. With an uptick in high-intensity armed conflicts worldwide, the safety of humanitarian workers has been increasingly jeopardized. This report focuses on the trend of security incidents such as attacks, abductions, and looting, and their devastating impact on humanitarian efforts. #HumanRights #Security #HumanitarianAid https://lnkd.in/ddjmrTEV

  • 🌍 Reflecting on 2024: The Cost of Climate Inaction Heatwaves, floods, and droughts devastated lives and livelihoods in 2024, highlighting humanity’s ongoing lack of preparedness. While El Niño played a role, its impact was often overstated, according to the World Weather Attribution report reviewing the year. 🔑 Early warning systems emerged as a critical tool—one of the most cost-effective ways to save lives. Clear, timely, and targeted alerts can prevent tragedies, but more must be done. Every country needs to implement, test, and continuously improve these systems to safeguard communities from extreme weather. #ClimateChange #EarlyWarningSystems #Humanitarian https://lnkd.in/dCbQGy9U

  • Oxfam's recent report “Putting An End To World Hunger – The European Union’s role in transforming the global food system” underscores a stark reality: farmers worldwide produce more than enough food to feed everyone, yet hunger continues to rise. Since 2017, global hunger has sharply increased, highlighting the urgent need for action. The European Union (EU) holds a pivotal role in shaping the future of the global food system. As the report points out, smallholder farmers in the Global South have enormous potential to combat hunger, but they need far better support to realize this. By investing in these farmers and ensuring climate justice, the EU can lead efforts to transform the global food system into one that is more sustainable, equitable, and resilient to climate change. Key actions include: > Supporting smallholder farmers in the Global South to tackle hunger. > Addressing climate change’s impact on food security. > Ending unsustainable land use that fuels inequality. > Breaking corporate control in food systems and enhancing fair global food governance. #foodsecurity #SDG2 #europe #humanitarian https://lnkd.in/dEKD6D2R
