HUVANT produces virtual and haptic models of complex organs to enable med students, residents as well as surgeons to perform appropriate surgical planning, thus easing the development of patient-specific, less-invasive and more precise procedures. Our phantoms combine in an innovative way immersive virtual reality with physical 3D models, having functional and haptic feedback similar to those of real organs, into a single and integrated simulation platform. The virtual and the physical parts of our phantoms are perfectly superimposable, in order to give the users a superior planning and training experience. HUVANT is a spin-off of the University of Milano aiming at supporting the work of surgeons by giving them the virtual and physical tools needed to plan, simulate, and explain any type of surgical practice, from the simplest ones to the ones made with the last developed procedures or tools. HUVANT will revolutionize the approach of surgical residents to their practical-theoretical training by giving them virtual and physical tools needed to maximize the time efficiency of their studies. It was a pleasure to participate to Riccione 65th congress of the Italian Nephrology Society (Società Italiana Nefrologia), supporting the workshop about vascular access, coordinated by professor Carlo Lomonte. We had the chance to assist to live simulations of the creation of arteriovenous fistulas using grafts and the maintenance of vascular access using PTA balloon catheters.
