From the province of Mpumalanga, South Africa, Refilwe Motswiane is an MSc student in medical microbiology at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. As part of the antimicrobial resistance team, her research there focuses on Acinetobacter baumannii and antibacterial properties of plants against bacteria. At the Bacteriology lab, ICGEB Trieste, she is learning different molecular biology and microbiology techniques and collaborating in different projects such as investigating Alcaligenes faecalis as a potential biocontrol agent for the rice pathogen Pseudomonas fuscovaginae - an extension of her interests in antibiotic resistance. "The ICGEB Special Programme with South African HDIs, to me, means access to world-class research facilities and mentorship to enhance my scientific expertise. It’s empowering to be part of a programme that prioritizes the development of researchers from historically disadvantaged institutions." She adds: "This experience at ICGEB has not only expanded my technical skills but also enriched my perspective on the collaborative nature of global science. I am particularly inspired by the diverse research community here and how it drives innovation through teamwork. I am excited to take these lessons back to my home institute and continue contributing to the field of microbiology and beyond." In the future, Refilwe would like to work on developing cutting-edge solutions for combating antimicrobial resistance, as well as engaging more in science policy to bridge the gap between research and implementation in health systems. #antimicrobialresistance #microbiology #SouthAfrica Department of Science, Technology and Innovation Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU)
