How Roosevelt’s blood pressure helped change health policy In the mid-20th century, hypertension wasn’t widely recognized as a major health risk. Today, we know much more about diagnosing hypertension, and there are effective medications available. Research into hypertension and its complications received a major boost thanks to the personal involvement of a politician who was a key figure in shaping world politics. A grim diagnosis proves to be true Despite a blood pressure reading of 220/120, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s doctor gave him a clean bill of health. However, during the 1945 Yalta Conference, Winston Churchill’s physician noted Roosevelt’s frailty, predicting a grim future. He wrote, “the president appears a very sick man. He has all the symptoms of hardening of the arteries…” and “I give him only a few months to live”. Tragically, this prediction came true when Roosevelt suffered a fatal stroke just two months later. His death brought hypertension into the spotlight, changing health policy and public perception. Policy change sparked by tragedy In 1948, three years after Roosevelt’s death, President Truman signed the National Heart Act into law. The Act established the National Heart Institute (now the NHLBI) and launched studies like the Framingham Heart Study. These studies confirmed the link between hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure, laying the groundwork for new therapies and future public health efforts. Roosevelt’s diet and the link between food and heart health Roosevelt’s diet, rich in fats and processed foods like fried chicken and hot dogs, likely contributed to his high blood pressure. At the time, there was little understanding of the connection between diet and heart health. Later research, however, confirmed that reducing saturated fats could lower hypertension risks. In the meantime, the sugar industry saw a business opportunity. The Sugar Research Foundation funded studies promoting low-fat diets in the 1960s while downplaying sugar’s role in heart disease, shaping public perceptions for decades. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that conclusive research linked high sugar consumption to higher blood pressure and cardiovascular risks. Protecting public health from industry influence Industry influence continues to shape health policies today. The WHO’s report on the commercial determinants of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) shows how industry-funded studies still interfere with public health decisions. To combat this the Filtered Project’s European campaign #CanWeBeSerious focuses on reducing industry influence on health policy. As we recognize World Diabetes Day this month, it's crucial to address how downplaying sugar’s harmful effects impacts diabetes awareness and management as well. A unified approach to tackling NCDs ensures that public health priorities are based on sound science, prioritizing the well-being of all. #JACARDI #EU4Health #HealthUnion

🌍 Inspiring discussions on best practices for public health at the European Public Health Conference in Lisbon! Thanks to two side events one organized by European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) and NFP4 HEALTH and other by #EU4HealthKids during the pre-conference day. It was an honor to present our work on the JACARDI project, focusing on #transferability and #sustainability. It was stimulating to share the panel on #NCDs prevention, moderated by Florina Telea, with great initiatives funded under the #EU4Health program, exploring the challenges and success factors in cross-country knowledge transfer. A special thanks to HaDEA Director Marina Zanchi for her inspiring vision and guidance. Key takeaways I will carry with me: 🔹Co-design: Emphasizing collaborative approaches that integrate the perspectives of all stakeholders, from local to national levels. 🔹Sustainability: Ensuring that health initiatives have a lasting impact through resource management, policy alignment, and scalable models. 🔹Synergies: Leveraging shared knowledge, resources, and innovations across EU countries to maximize health outcomes and create unified responses to NCD challenges. 🔹Adaptability: Tailoring practices to address country-specific needs and contexts, enhancing the effectiveness of EU-wide health initiatives. 🔹Capacity Building: Empowering professionals with tools, training, and resources to sustain and expand best practices. “Let's end diabetes stigma and discrimination.” – by Prof. Chantal Mathieu, EASD 🎥 We are honoured to share a powerful message from Prof. chantal mathieu, President of European Association for the Study of Diabetes e.V. (EASD) and Vice-Chair of European Diabetes Forum (EUDF), supporting the important work of JACARDI. The statistics she highlights are stark: 32 million people in the EU live with #diabetes – nearly 1 in 10 adults. Additionally, almost 300,000 children and adolescents in our region are affected by type 1 diabetes. As we mark #DiabetesAwarenessMonth, Prof. Mathieu emphasises the vital importance of our work across 21 countries, particularly in screening, integrated care, self-management, and diabetes registries. Special recognition to Astrid Lavens from Sciensano and Prof. Geert Goderis from KU Leuven for their valuable contributions to JACARDI. Involving people living with Diabetes in development and decision-making is essential Listening to and engaging people with diabetes in development processes leads to healthcare that is supportive, valuable, and empowering. By embracing a holistic approach, we can create more accessible care where no one is left behind. At #JACARDI, we’re committed to advancing diabetes care and promoting equity by collaborating with a wide range of communities, including migrants, refugees, and people of varied ages, genders, and regions. In our work we use co-creation practices that place lived experience and expertise at the heart of decision-making. Here are ways to ensure community voices and voices of people with lived experiences are heard in impactful ways: 🤝Build trust – Developing authentic partnerships takes time, but it’s essential for meaningful collaboration. 🏆 Set shared goals and roles – Recognize and value each person’s unique expertise and lived experience. Be honest, and avoid raising unrealistic expectations. ✅Implement co-creation practices – Empower people with real opportunities to shape development processes. For example, organise workshops, interviews or community hearings. ️ ❤️ Enable safe, accessible participation – Ensure communication is inclusive, and create welcoming, accessible spaces for all. For example, pay attention to the use of language and terms. Be open, curious and respectable towards people and let people be who they are. 🔵 On #WorldDiabetesDay: Empowering Well-being Through JACARDI As we mark World Diabetes Day 2024 on 14 November, we are honoured to share insights from Bart Torbeyns, Executive Director of the European Diabetes Forum (EUDF), on how JACARDI's initiatives align with this year's theme of diabetes and well-being. Health Literacy & Self-Management The power of education in diabetes management cannot be understated. When people with diabetes are well-informed and properly supported in managing their condition, it builds confidence and brings peace of mind - not only for them but also for their families, teachers, and support networks. Workplace Integration Despite progress, workplace discrimination against people with diabetes remains a significant challenge. Many individuals still feel compelled to hide their condition, particularly when administering insulin. JACARDI's work package on labour participation addresses this crucial issue, recognizing that people with diabetes can and do make valuable contributions to our economy and society. “This work package on labour participation is just one example, but for me, maybe the most important example to contribute to the well-being of people with diabetes.” – says Bart.🎤 Our mission at JACARDI extends beyond medical management – we are working to create an inclusive environment where people with diabetes can fully participate in all aspects of life, from professional endeavours to personal pursuits, without fear of discrimination or isolation.
