The world population is increasing and so is the demand for protein. At the same time, we are facing a triple planetary crisis involving climate breakdown, biodiversity loss and uncontrolled pollution. To face these challanges and achieve climate stability while nourishing humanity, more sustainable food systems are required. The #IPSUS Project founded by SUSFOOD ERA-Net explores new opportunities for upcycled plant and algae proteins from agri-food raw materials otherwise destined to join tonnes and tonnes of global food loss and waste. At the Sustainability and Valorisation Area, Environment Division of Stazione Sperimentale per l'Industria delle Conserve Alimentari - SSICA, we're exploring the protein potential of some plant by-products, as well as grape pomace, hazelnut skin and shell, but, above all, we're testing and trying to maximize the yield of protein extraction from some seaweeds, such as Ulva lactuca, Gracilaria sp., Chondrus crispus, and especially from microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and cyanobacterium Arthospira platensis (Spirulina). Here there are the beautiful colors of proteins extracted from these valuable matrices. #Algae #microalgae #seaweeds #algaeproteins #proteins #sustainability #Chlorella #Spirulina

📢 𝐁𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒: news 𝐚𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 entries in the Novel Food status Catalogue 🌱 ➡️ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞? It is a tool to check if a product can be put on the EU market as food or food supplement 🥗, or it has to be authorized by the EU because it is « novel » and as such has to pass a safety assessment: https://lnkd.in/erJHh5Gq ➡️ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬? Algae products in the Catalog include more than 60 entries covering several species of microalgae and seaweed whole biomass and products derived thereof (extracts, oils). ➡️ 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: « Not novel in food / in food supplements » = was present in EU people diet before 1997 (creation of the NF Catalogue) and is recognized as safe. It is a “normal” food or food supplement, and its access to the market is not subject to the pre-market authorization. Example: Spirulina biomass / Haematococcus biomass. ➡️ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬? 🌱 Microalgae: 𝘊𝘩𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 𝘋𝘶𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢 (Dunal) 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘪 𝘏𝘢𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘑𝘢𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘴 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘢 𝘧𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘴 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘢 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘹𝘪𝘮𝘢 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘬𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘪 𝘚𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘮𝘶𝘴 𝘷𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘫𝘰𝘳 🌱 Macroalgae: 𝘈𝘭𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘰𝘯 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘋𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘦𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢 𝘌𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘷𝘢 𝘌𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘮 𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘮 𝘌𝘶𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘶𝘮𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘮 𝘌𝘶𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘶𝘮𝘢 𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘶𝘮 𝘎𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘪 𝘎𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘮 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘓𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘩𝘺𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘢 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘱𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘕𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘺𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘢 𝘭𝘦𝘶𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘢 𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘳𝘢 𝘥𝘪𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘢 𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘳𝘢 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘢 𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘳𝘢 𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘗𝘺𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘢 𝘺𝘦𝘻𝘰𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘚𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘫𝘢𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢 𝘚𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘮 𝘧𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘦 𝘜𝘭𝘷𝘢 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 We are beyond proud of this update, the result of a long-standing collaboration with the algae stakeholders in Europe 🙏🏼: #EU4Algae #DGMARE #CINEA, Maris Stulgis, Adrien Vincent Laura Maragna Charlotte Jagot Efthalia (Thalia) Arvaniti Alessandra Portis, Carlos Unamunzaga Jean-Paul Cadoret Vitor Verdelho Lisandra Meinerz Monique Ras - de Moncuit Anne Pajot Léa Braud F.
