Chi siamo
At the 2016 Warsaw Summit, NATO approved the development of a framework to better understand challenges and threats emanating from Africa and the Middle East. As part of the Framework, The Southern Hub has been established at Allied Joint Force Command Naples in order to improve NATO’s awareness and understanding of the opportunities and challenges from those regions, while contributing to the overall coordination of NATO’s activities and efforts. The world faces a number of challenges and threats. Although NATO is no stranger to operating in Africa and the Middle East, operating in an area and understanding an area are two separate efforts. The Southern Hub is a key element of developing that understanding. The first steps in this development will be answering several questions: How will The Hub gather information? Where will this information come from? How will this information be analyzed? And finally, what do we do with the information after it is analyzed? The answers to these questions all revolve around one thing; relationships. The Hub will develop new relationships with International Organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations, Civil Society Organisations, and other non-NATO entities and strengthen established relationships with key stakeholders that already do great work in the focus areas.

📌 Our team participated in this year’s 𝐀𝐭𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬 under the theme “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰: 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱”. 📌 Last week, the NATO Strategic Direction-South Hub and the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding (CCCPA) organized a workshop that brought together Subject Matter Experts from the #Sahel region as well as practitioners from the Preventing/Countering Violent Extremism, and Women, Peace and Security #WPS community in Brussels. The event aimed to facilitate discussions on the current #security challenges in the Sahel, and their implications on women, children, and other groups in vulnerable situations. 📌 The event highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive approaches to address instability factors in the Sahel. With regional SMEs calling attention to: ➡️ The devastating impact of terrorism on vulnerable groups and the need for innovative solutions. ➡️ The unfolding peace and security challenges in the Sahel, and their potential regional spillover effects on broader West Africa - with focus on violent extremism conducive to terrorism. ➡️ The importance of conducting thorough gender analyses to ensure that initiatives for preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE) are contextually relevant and gender responsive. ➡️ The crucial role of women and women-led organizations in these efforts. ➡️ Best practices in protecting vulnerable groups in volatile contexts and leveraging their potential in counter-terrorism efforts. We thoroughly thank all the panelists and experts for their invaluable contributions to this event: Maya Ragab Assal Mahmoud Giovanni Romani Lantana Bako Abdullahi Sally Maforchi Mboumien ALY TOUNKARA Joana de Deus Pereira Ph.D Jeannine Ella A.
