A surgical team at Royal Papworth Hospital has carried out the UK’s first lung transplant using a new machine which ‘reconditions’ donor organs. The team, led by Mr Marius Berman, Mr Giuseppe Aresu and Mr pradeep kaul used a technique called ex-vivo lung perfusion (EVLP). This takes donated lungs which are initially considered marginally acceptable or marginally unacceptable for transplant, reconditions them outside the body in a special machine - the XPS system from XVIVO - and can make them suitable for donation. Daniel Evans-Smith (49) became the first person in the UK outside of clinical trials to receive a double-lung transplant using this new machine, which could improve the number of lungs available for donation and benefit more patients currently waiting for a lifesaving lung transplant. Dr Jas Parmar, Transplant Consultant at Royal Papworth and also Chair of Cardiothoracic Advisory Group (Lungs) said: "We are delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to these very ill patients in need of lung transplantation. "We have only been able to do this with the support that we have enjoyed from our trust, NHS England, NHS Blood and Transplant and of course all donor families without whom this work would be impossible. We are always indebted to their selfless act of organ donation.” After rehab in critical care and then on our surgical ward, Daniel recently returned home to Northampton. He said: "I can’t thank my donor and their family enough. Pulmonology on Air on behalf of Erbe Bronchoscopy: Let’s revisit the live case from Zurich, presented during Pulmonology On Air 2024. Drs Carolin Steinack and Thomas Gaisl used Ion robotic bronchoscopy and cone-beam CT (CBCT) to diagnose two peripheral lung lesions near the pleura. Key highlights of the procedure: ✅ Procedure under 30 minutes. ✅ Successful targeting of lesions without a bronchus sign. ✅ Cryobiopsy was performed with a 1.1 mm cryoprobe for histological analysis. This case demonstrates the potential of robotic-assisted bronchoscopy in pulmonary diagnostics. Pulmonology on Air on behalf of Erbe Bronchoscopy: A closer look at the innovative techniques from Japan’s live case at Pulmonology On Air 2024. Drs Toshiyuki Nakai and Yuji Matsumoto demonstrated the 2-scope method, combining a therapeutic bronchoscope with a radial EBUS probe for precise localization of peripheral pulmonary lesions. Tissue sampling was performed using a 1.7 mm cryoprobe, ensuring faster freezing times of just 3 seconds and yielding large, high-quality biopsy samples. 👉 Missed this session? 🚨 Mediastinal Cryobiopsy: Another Game Changer in Interventional Pulmonology 🚨 We’re excited to share results from our multi-center 👨⚕️ Swiss study showing that mediastinal cryobiopsy significantly boosts diagnostic yield e.g. for sarcoidosis (41% → 93%) and lymphomas (46% → 92%) compared to EBUS-TBNA, making invasive mediastinoscopy largely unnecessary.
