Structured Approaches for Forest fire Emergencies in Resilient Societies

Forest fires are exacerbated by extreme weather conditions, which are increasing both in frequency and in magnitude due to climate change effects. This points to the need for improving the effectiveness of emergency management solutions aimed to help society in becoming more resilient to emergencies arising before, during and after forest fire events. SAFERS will act along the key phases of the emergency management cycle, coupling information from EO data and services offered by Copernicus and GEOSS, crowdsourced data from social media and from specific applications that can be used by both citizens as well as from in-field professional agents, data generated by accurate sensors to detect smoke or fires. Advanced algorithm based on Artificial Intelligence will be used to generate risk maps and early warnings in the preparedness phase, estimate the forest fire extension and its propagation in function of the forecasted weather and soil conditions in the response phase, compute the impacts of an extinguished fire in terms of economic losses and monitor the soil recovery in the post-event phase.

Il progetto SAFERS su SKY SAFERS project, coordinato da LINKS, è stato presentato su SKY TG24: grazie ad avanzi algoritmi di Intelligenza Artificiale e l’utilizzo di telecamere di sorveglianza fornite da WaterView, SAFERS può allertare tempestivamente le autorità in caso di incendio. Inoltre, l'IA è utilizzata per stimare la propagazione di un incendio (CIMA Research Foundation) e per delineare le aree bruciate, estraendo gli impatti in termini di vegetazione e infrastrutture. Il sistema è stato dimostrato in quattro paesi, tra cui L'Italia, dove grazie al supporto di CSI Piemonte e Protezione Civile regionale è stata realizzata una dimostrazione su larga scala. SAFERS Exploitation meeting at the Lavazza Museum On Monday 4 March, at the Lavazza Museum, Claudio Rossi and Angelica Urbanelli presented the SAFERS project and its tools to several European stakeholders. The project, coordinated by LINKS, created a complete fire prevention and management system in just three years. The open access platform illustrated, designed for all public and private operators, has attracted a lot of interest from participants and, in the coming months, will be the subject of a trial period.
