Thoughts on mental health by our founder
I often say that a successful investor-startup relationship has to work both ways. Not every investor is the right fit for us, just as we might not be right for many investors. But I sometimes wonder if, when faced with an offer, knowing all the challenges that come with running a startup, we would have the strength to decline due to a perceived misalignment. Luckily for me, today at SiriusGame we couldn't be further from this dilemma. I'm grateful that my instincts led me to partner with ULTRA.VC and their accelerator. There will be plenty of time to share the immense value of their workshops, support, mentors and its overall community. For now, I want to highlight something that has a great significance for my team and I: today we were approached an investigation on founders mental health and how investors can best support them. If you are a start-up founder you know that often we feel the pressure to always perform in front of investors, to never show weakness, to act like we're at 100% all the time. That’s why I’ve typically shared more with angel investors, who, knowing me on a personal level, understood and value me holistically. In the past three years I knew I could turn to them when I was struggling, without shame, and if my start up and I are still here today it's also thanks to them (Michele Giliberti has had to endure his share this in the last year 😅 ). If you've met me as a peer, you know I have always encouraged honest conversations between fellow founders and tried to keep things real at least amongst us, pushing to share more than what we post on our Linkedin feed, so often a place of depressing comparisons. My conversations with Marco Cappellini and Aleksandra Maravic never fail to leave me feeling refreshed and less lonely. Personally I have chosen to have the same approach within my team as well, but that's a me choice, or maybe I am just lucky to have found Miriam Torregrossa and Fabiana Gubitosa who I have accepted me for who I am. I would love to see more VCs adopt this approach—it not only benefits founders but could significantly improve startup success rates as well.
