  • Screenless Cities and the Urban Experience: In Conversation with Hubert Beroche Dive into an insightful conversation with Hubert Beroche, Founder and President of Urban AI. Hubert explains that screenless cities shift attention from screens to streets, challenging the dominance of digital interfaces in #urban life. He adds that our engagement with cities has increasingly been mediated through screens, leading to a rise in "#smombies"—#pedestrians so absorbed in their phones that they barely notice their surroundings. In our conversation, Hubert discusses how the concept of the #ScreenlessCity aims to create sustainable, desirable alternatives to screens without imposing outright bans. He also describes innovative projects and ideas, demonstrating that information can be embodied in the #city itself. Are you curious to learn more? Check out our entire #interview with Hubert Beroche, where we explore how screenless cities can reshape our interaction with public spaces: https://lnkd.in/eQ_u7FSF We'd love to hear your thoughts—feel free to reach out with any questions or comments!

New Research Alert! How do built environment characteristics and sociodemographic factors shape commuting patterns? Our new research, "Travel Times across the U.S. - An Exploration of the Variability of Mobility Patterns," leverages US Census LODES data to analyze travel time, commuting flows, and their underlying drivers through a twofold approach: - A trip-focused and time-focused conceptualization of commuting data - Generalized Additive Models simulating trip distributions based on travel time and key indicators Findings highlight the significant role of built environment attributes and sociodemographics in shaping demand, with travel time closely linked to trip impedance and #walkability differences between OD tracts. These results support the hypothesis of site- and trip-specific time values, contributing to a decades-long research on travel time. Read more: https://lnkd.in/egTqhP-P

New Research on Night Cities! We are excited to share that our research on the spatiotemporal analysis of walkability and access to services in Milan has just been published as an open-access paper on Computers MDPI! Titled "The Right to the Night City: Exploring the Temporal Variability of the 15-min City in Milan and Its Implications for Nocturnal Communities," the paper sheds light on the disparities in access to urban services between day and night, emphasizing the needs of nighttime communities. It aims to contribute to advancing #UrbanPlanning strategies that better serve nocturnal communities and foster more inclusive cities. Through a #GIS-based analysis, we reveal significant variations in #walkability potential across temporal and spatial dimensions, challenging the conventional, static understanding of the #15MinCity. Our findings highlight gaps in nighttime service availability and propose a time-variant approach to urban accessibility that supports equity for all city users, day and night. The paper is freely available for download here: https://lnkd.in/djKhMvdw For those interested in the topic, we also have a concise web article summarizing the research available here: https://lnkd.in/eFVhq7PQ

Tackling Transport Poverty in Milan Our latest research, "Transport Poverty: Accessibility to Public Transport and Social Vulnerability in Milan," examines the intersection of socio-economic vulnerability and #PublicTransport accessibility in #Milan. Using the Public Transport Accessibility Level (#PTAL) metric and socio-demographic #data, we identified areas where disadvantaged populations face the most significant barriers to #mobility. We are grateful to Fondazione per lo sviluppo sostenibile for their contribution to the research. Key findings reveal significant disparities in #transport access, with vulnerable groups—such as the elderly, unemployed, and minorities—often concentrated in areas with low public transport accessibility. This highlights the urgent need for targeted policies to promote social #equity in #urban mobility. #TransportPoverty is a global issue, impacting marginalized communities and deepening socio-economic inequalities. Addressing these disparities becomes even more critical as cities transition towards #climate neutrality. By leveraging robust metrics and innovative #mapping tools, such as the ones applied in Milan and other case studies like Munich, Tunis, and Toronto, the research aims to drive informed decision-making and create more inclusive transport systems. New Research Alert! Excited to unveil Part 3 of our Free-Flow Carsharing Series, diving deeper into the evolving landscape of shared mobility! This latest study, "Toward a Vehicle Allocation Model," examines the demand patterns of Zity by Mobilize, a free-floating electric carsharing service operating in major European cities, including Milan. The research identifies key factors influencing #mobility demand and offers strategies to optimize #vehicle reallocation by analyzing temporal and spatial dynamics. By analyzing usage patterns, the research developed a data-driven model to optimize vehicle allocation, maximize accessibility, and minimize reallocation efforts. Collaboratively conducted with NYU Center for Urban Science + Progress students as part of their Capstone Project (2022/2023 academic year), this study also provides policy recommendations for integrating private mobility services like Zity into urban transportation planning. The collaboration with Zity as the #data provider was essential in shaping the insights of this study, offering a detailed view of demand patterns and vehicle allocation. The first part of the series presented a general overview of the mode typology, and the second part outlined analytical considerations through an applied case study. Explore how data-driven strategies can shape the future of shared mobility and #urban #transportation: https://lnkd.in/eTkADaUh Join the conversation and share your thoughts on optimizing #SharedMobility for a sustainable future!

Milestone Alert for Transform Transport! We’re excited to announce the release of our first-ever toolkit: 15min City Score Toolkit: https://lnkd.in/eX_km8MT In our ongoing quest to evaluate the effectiveness of the #15minute #cities concept, we've developed a #toolkit designed to simplify #accessibility analysis for #ProximityServices across diverse #urban landscapes worldwide. In our latest #research endeavor, "15min City Score Toolkit – Urban Walkability Analytics”, we dove deep into the methodology to develop this toolkit: https://lnkd.in/eY2xhaxN We first started by defining proximity services and categorizing them into eight main categories. Leveraging the Uber H3 hexagon grid system as our foundation, we ensured consistency and a hierarchical structure, allowing users to customize their analyses according to specific needs. Filtering #pedestrian networks from OpenStreetMap, we calculated walking times to essential services and assigned weights to amenities based on proximity. We implemented our methodology in #Python and integrated it with QGIS, an open-source #GIS software. The toolkit estimated the Walk Score of over 100 cities. The results show the advantages of the tool in the optimization of proximity services analysis for #walkability planning and #UrbanPlanning strategies worldwide, in alignment with the 15-minute cities concept. We rely heavily on open-source software for our work. This marks a special moment for us as we give back to the #GIS community by making accessible the tools we rely on daily. Accessibility and travel time are at the heart of 15-minute cities—our toolkit provides a quick and effective way to assess both. Stay tuned for more updates and feel free to explore how the toolkit can support your urban planning initiatives!
