Today is International Women's Day and is the 6 month that I joining BSO as a procurement placement student. I would like to share my view about young women should be braver and 'speak loudly' in the working workplace based on my reality in these 6 months and articles I recently read. In the HCSA Negotiation Training class earlier this week, Adviser Alan mentioned 'Gender' is a factor that might cause communication bounder. Furthermore, research from the GSB article ‘Having More Power at the Bargaining Table Helps Women — But Also Sparks Backlash’ showed women often lack confidence in negotiations, even when empowered. I have deeply same feeling about it. I'm a young woman in workplace. During the negotiation training, I was too unconfident to express the things I'd researched and prepared, although my team members were kind and agreeable. I've thinking the whole week - what caused my unconfidence in communication? Under East Asian education as always, people are taught to be deferential, keep mute, and do not be different as others. But, is tradition necessarily right? 'Speak loudly', it was the second time in this half year that I've been suggested, it is enlightening to me. After more than 20 years of "moderate" education and the common psychology that women often lack self-confidence, should young women, especially young East Asian women, consciously straighten back and express opinions loudly to broken our fetters as those women who argued for their rights hundred of years ago? Invoke words from negotiation advisor Alan - 'you have a lot to share...as you do more your confidence will grow and you will do very well'. When I joined the hiring event in QUB with BSO, the most question I heard from Chinese girls was 'I'm worried that my English is not good enough’. I’m the same sometimes, but girls, Only when we can express it confidently then we can put the knowledge we have learned into play and strive for more opportunities and benefits for our team and organization in work. I'm lucky enough, on a team with many sagacious and brave women, they are elder than me and taught me a lot, like 'You can freely do what you want, you are young and are not busy by marriage.', 'You are a big girl who can decide your life', 'You are an asset for the team' etc...Their encouragement and example influence me so that I can see a little bit of progress myself in each activity, even if I am no longer tongue-tied when speaking. Women, especially those young women who have the same unconfidence sense as me, let's try to speak loudly in a confident way and then think about how to get more benefits for our teams in an ambitious way. Perfect 100% comes from 100 1%.
