We are excited to announce that our paper "Non-linear Model Predictive Control for Multi-task GPS-free Autonomous Navigation in Vineyards" has been published on IEEE Explore in the link down below: https://lnkd.in/epviwVaw In this paper we developed an advance autonomous navigation system for a rover operating within row-based crops. We proposed a position-agnostic system to address the challenging situation when standard localization methods, like GPS, fail due to unfavorable weather or obstructed signal, such as in densely vegetated areas. We proposed a novel system that leverages a single RGB-D camera and a Non-linear Model Predictive Control strategy to navigate through entire rows, adapting to various crop spacing. During tests, the presented solution demonstrates versatility in handling diverse crop densities, environmental factors, and multiple navigation tasks to support agricultural activities at an extremely cost-effective implementation. A special thanks to the authors (Marco Ambrosio; Mauro Martini; Alessandro Navone; Andrea Ostuni; Marcello Chiaberge and our former Master's Thesis student Matteo Sperti) and to Clearpath Robotics by Rockwell Automation which played an important role in providing us their tools. #robotics #ai #autonomousnavigation #localization #gps #servicerobotics #agritech

We are thrilled to announce that our paper "Semi-Supervised Novelty Detection for Precise Ultra-Wideband Error Signal Prediction" has been published on IEEE Explore in the link down below: https://lnkd.in/eiHmTDdE Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is emerging as a cost-effective solution for precise localization. But UWB signals can be disrupted by reflections and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) conditions, which means that the layout of an environment and any obstacles can significantly impact UWB's reliability for tasks like robot navigation. In our latest work, we tackle this challenge with a novel approach. By using a semi-supervised "fingerprint" detection method, we train an unsupervised autoencoder neural network on ideal UWB conditions, allowing it to identify signal disturbances caused by environmental changes. This method adapts UWB’s functionality to the specific characteristics of each environment, enhancing accuracy - even in evolving spaces. Our method represents a breakthrough in reliable UWB-based localization ad our experiments, verified with visual tracking, show promising improvements in precision. We are proud to announce that our paper "GPS-free autonomous navigation in cluttered tree rows with deep semantic segmentation" has been published on Robotics and Autonomous Systems - Elsevier. Paper link down below: https://lnkd.in/e_fCMH-j In this paper we propose two segmentation-based methods for autonomous navigation in vineyards, orchards and row of trees. The network was trained with a synthetic dataset (https://lnkd.in/e37hNpt7), proving how synthetic data can achieve similar performance to real ones ensuring generalization. We compared out methods outperforming state of-the-art methods, achieving significant improvements.
