Thank you to all those that wrote to States Assembly – Jersey's elected parliament members challenging them to vote in favour of the Amendments to the Marine Spatial Plan. Frustratingly, the Government’s proposal, which was significantly worse for our local waters and their long term survival was voted through today. Jonathan Renouf the former Minister for Environment, has agreed that we can share his response to the votes below: [Many of you] wrote to States members regarding the Marine Spatial Plan (MSP) urging support for greater marine protection. I agree entirely. You may know that I commissioned the MSP and fully supported the draft plan which included 27% of the island's waters to be put into marine protected areas (MPA's). Unfortunately, the minister chose to remove some of the most important areas - including 50% of the maerl areas - from the marine protected areas. I supported the first amendment to the MSP that would have reintroduced the areas the minister had removed. I spoke in the debate along with many others; we tried our best, but I regret to say that the government view prevailed. It was particularly disappointing that members didn't support protecting maerl, and didn't even support protecting the most important area for the scallop divers, who fish entirely sustainably, and who we should be supporting. I'm sorry that my efforts and those of others who worked very hard to get a better result did not work. But I thank you for writing. Your voice was heard, I referenced the letters that people wrote in my speech, and it gave members considerable pause for thought to know that there was such strong support for greater marine protection. The fight goes on... All best JONATHAN RENOUF Deputy for St Brelade.” Further to that, Deputy Renouf reminds us of what the current Chief Minister Lyndon Farnham said in 2021 “I am completely against a continuation of heavy duty trawling & dredging. That has to be stopped. It is pure vandalism of our seabed." So Chief Minister, we challenge you to answer what has changed your mind in those few years? Why have you voted against stopping dredging in even the most sensitive, threatened habitats. “Man of principle.” #sustainability #biodiversity #saveourshores

🐠 ACTION NEEDED! 💪 The States Assembly – Jersey's elected parliament is due to vote upon the Marine Spatial Plan 🐟 Tuesday 22 October - the National Trust for Jersey 🌳 is asking for you to contact the States Members here https://lnkd.in/ekSdZX4C 🗳️ to voice your support for how much of our precious Maerl we should be protecting for future generations 👶 Our Maerl is one of the most biodiverse marine habitats in the world, providing shelter, nursery grounds, breeding grounds, and feeding areas for a large number of marine species. In Jersey specifically, you can find up to 173 different species within just one square metre of Maerl, including juvenile populations that are critical for our fishing industry such as scallops 🦀 and 🦞 Like the more familiar corals, Maerl grows at a pace of just 0.5mm per year, so it can take decades and even centuries for a Maerl bed to fully establish. Some can reach 1000 years old, like in Jersey, or up to 5000 years old, like off the coast in Brittany. Aside from biodiversity, Maerl beds play an important role in stabilising our seabed and in regulating our climate, by drawing down carbon and locking it away for hundreds, and even thousands of years. Jersey has a rare and important opportunity to protect its precious Maerl. On Tuesday 22 October, States Members will be voting on the extent of Maerl that will be protected in the Marine Spatial Plan. This includes voting on an amendment to the proposed document, that would ensure that 88% of the Islands Maerl will be protected, rather than the 33% currently proposed. Without your input, we may lose our wonderful Maerl and all the rich biodiversity it supports to the cost of future generations. A quick email can make a huge difference. Thank your 🙏 FSFL founders. #sustainability #strongertogether #ecoactive #biodiversity #savesourshores Jersey Association of Sustainability Practitioners (JASP) Jersey Heritage National Trust for Jersey National Trust Lewis Pugh

Thank you to everyone who contributed and attended our event last night, particularly Standard Bank Group for hosting! It was great to welcome a few new faces too! Anna-Marie Egre and Charlie Petulla spoke candidly and with pride about Standard Bank’s recent impact assessment, and then Liall Medina from Etcho presented on the power of advisors. As I mentioned last night, our next event on 19 November will be a celebration of the first anniversary of our group. On the back of feedback received, we will be shaking up the format for this event and using it as an evening for us all to communicate challenges with a view to influencing matters relating to Sustainable Finance in Jersey. More details to follow soon, but in the meantime, get thinking about any challenges you, your colleagues or businesses are experiencing. Abigail Syvret and Michelle Moffat also asked for our members help. It would be great if some of you could volunteer and represent our group and of course your place of work. The detail of their request is as follows: 'As part of the work to deliver policy OE6 of the Carbon Neutral Roadmap, the Climate Change Engagement team is hoping to offer a series of Lunch and Learn session during the week commencing 21 October to cover a range of topics addressing financial literacy and sustainable finance. The sessions would be targeted at under 30s, including College students, and would provide a short introductory talk followed by questions and networking. The sessions would cover: · day to day finance and budgeting (e.g. current accounts, money management etc.) · savings and investments (everything from saving for Christmas to saving a mortgage deposit) · borrowing (e.g. overdrafts / credit cards, loans and mortgages) · crypto currencies · selecting sustainable financial products and services If you, or a colleague would be interested in delivering one of these short talks or would just like to find out more, please contact Abbie Syvret, Climate Change Engagement Officer: a.svvret2@gov.je' Looking forward to seeing you all on the 19 November!!!

We encourage you to invite your colleagues and friends who share our passion for sustainable finance. Let’s make this a great opportunity for learning and networking! Can’t wait to see you all there! #SustainableFinance #ImpactAssessment #Networking #FutureFinanceLeaders Tom McKenna Lydia Stephens Amy King Simon Finch - Chartered MCSI

A big thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to Jersey Finance's Impact Investing Breakfast event, including our Events and Communications teams. I hope you found it as interesting and informative as I did! We had 5 excellent guest speakers who all spoke about Impact investing from slightly different angles, well done and thank you to them all (Rob Stewart Tze-wei Ng Sudha Bharadia Justin Sykes Julian Matthews). The event overran slightly and so unfortunately we didn’t have as much time for Q&As as hoped however, If any of our attendees would like to be connected to any of the guest speakers, please let me know.
