Obesity rates among adults has tripled worldwide since 1975. Obesity among children and adolescents has increased almost fivefold. Obesity is a major risk factor for chronic diseases like cardiovascular issues, cancer and diabetes. Obesity is preventable. With the help of nuclear techniques, health professionals can measure body composition better, calculate energy use and assess how lifestyle changes can help in the fight against obesity and malnutrition. Curious about how exactly it works? We explain in this video. #WorldObesityDay

129 years ago today, radioactivity was discovered by French physicist Henri Becquerel. Three days earlier, on 26 February, it was a cloudy day in Paris, which presented a problem for Becquerel. He had planned to demonstrate that certain minerals glow when exposed to strong light due to X-rays. However, the weather thwarted this experiment and led to a new discovery. Discouraged by the lack of sunlight, Becquerel placed the uranium he had intended to use in his desk drawer, resting on a covered photographic plate. When he returned, he found a fogged image of the uranium crystals that had been resting on it, even though the plate was wrapped in heavy black paper. He realized that the crystals were not phosphorescing from sunlight. Instead, he discovered that the crystals emitted spontaneous and penetrating rays without any external energy. Together with his doctoral student, Marie Skłodowska-Curie, and her husband Pierre, Becquerel studied this phenomenon, which was later named "radioactivity" — a term coined by Marie. This groundbreaking work earned them The Nobel Prize in Physics.

147 incidents of illegal or unauthorized activities involving nuclear and other radioactive material were reported by 32 countries in the IAEA Incident and Trafficking Database last year. The database fosters global information exchange about incidents that involve nuclear and other radioactive material falling out of regulatory control because they were lost, stolen, improperly disposed of or neglected. Explore more findings from our latest factsheet and discover how the database promotes global nuclear security. 📊 https://lnkd.in/dipyfdM5

We are exposed to radiation in our everyday life. Some of the most familiar sources of radiation include the sun, microwave ovens in our kitchens, and the radios we listen to in our cars. Most of this radiation carries no risk to our health. But some does. Read our #NuclearExplained: atoms.iaea.org/3SJzmO4
